My rig:
BB ATI 9800 pro (stock cooling)
-Cat 3.8's
-4x AGP, fastwrite OFF, write combining ON
-stock clock
P4 1.6a @ 2GHz (stock cooling)
768MB RDRAM, 125x4=500MHz FSB
Maxtor 80GB, Maxtor 160GB
350W Antec PSU
3 case fans

Anyway, I'm having some performance issues with CoD. I'll be playing the game and suddenly get really, really low frames, usually resulting in my death. Now, I was under the impression that this graphics card would be the Ultimate Gaming Experience, with super-high detail and good framerates.
Running 3dmark03 gave me a 5308,
running 3dmark01se gave me an 11902.

any idea what it could be? I did a CLEAN driver install, booting into safe mode and killing everything that said "ati" on it, then installing the drivers.

I'm tempted to reformat this weekend...I should install the gfx drivers AFTER installing chipset drivers, but BEFORE windowsupdate/other drivers/directx?

Your CPU,motherboard and RAM are holding you back.

well, I know THAT, but CoD should still run OK...I see slowdowns at pretty much all resolutions/detail settings. My hardware's old, but not THAT old.

If the slowdown is at all resolutions, that does support the theory of the cpu being the bottleneck. An excuse to upgrade maybe :) Otherwise, make sure nothing else is running when playing, drop aa and af... Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Ooh... maybe run ad-aware and or spybot search and destroy and make sure no spyware/adware is slowing you down.... Still thinking...

You could try a full uninstall of the ATI drivers and load them back up again. Also make sure you have the fix for CoD installed after you do so.

Or just use the Cat 3.9s, I use them still. The 4.1s don't run well on Wolf:ET.

This is CoD on my machine:

cod.jpg

That's 15 fps in the top right corner !!!

This is in the multiplayer map mp_brecourt at 1280x1024x32 with Extra general textures and Extra character textures using 2xAA and 8xAF.

My system:

Athlon 2100+ @ 2.3 Ghz (200x11.5)
Hercules 9800 Pro 128mb @ 430/380
1 Gig of PC2700 memory (7-3-3-2.5)
6200 in 3DMark2003

Now, for the most part, COD plays just fine but in some maps (with lots of trees and bushes), the FPS can drop into the teens - especially when zoomed in using a rifle scope - did anyone else notice that?

I have a 9800 Pro and CoD, and i notice i few bugs like you do. Mine is locked at about 60fps, and when I look down the lense of a sniper rifle, it halves, to exactly 30fps. It doesn't fluctuate, so it has to be a CoD bug. My friend and I have concluded that it only happens when you have AA turned on. This is with 3.9 and 4.10 cat's. So at least you know you're not alone.

hmm, what is this fix you refer to? Haven't heard of it.

I'm running 3.8's, since I thought the 4.1's might be part of the problem.

I think it was the 3.8s (and some before) that had problems with CoD, it's pretty well documented. If you use 3.9 or later it should clear up the CoD problems. I'm running the 3.10s with no troubles.

CoD used to have huge fps drops for me too when I was running my 1.8A @ stock.. and at 1024 resolutions, w/ 4xaa and 8xaf..

CoD was fixed with cat 3.10s and works best on those drivers.. fps drops are still present w/ all the overclocking and tweaking I had done w/ my pc.. I still get fps in the 30s (even lower rarely) which is a shame.. I think I should turn AA off to run this game better.. but I finished it just the way it was.. I cant let go of AA..

btw this happens on geforce based cards also.. CoD perfomance is actually better on radeons.. (for an ogl game)

I once played CoD with only 512mb of ram, was really unhappy with performance and load times.

I then upgraded to 1 gig of mem and a SATA hd. Now the game loads faster and I enter a new map before everyone else on the server does. :)

So yeah, at least a gig of mem and SATA hd are recommended.

I get weird artifacts in same place, blacks marks off explosions no-where else. Also the game crashes whilst loading the 2nd russian level.

My machine pretty much sux and CoD runs fine at 1024x768 with pretty much everything turned up. I never really notice slowdown unless it is a ping issue. It has got to be something else, my system is much slower!
