9800 GX2 temp question

I just got a second 9800 gx2 for my folding rig and I was wondering if my temps are ok. 3 of the 4 GPUs are at about 83c and then one of them is at 107C (this is under load folding).

Is this normal or could it be something to do with the headsink not being seated properly?

Not having X2s I can't say first hand, but 107C is very high and could spell early death for that card.

Are you using Rivatuner to increase the fan speeds? I'd also look at installling a fan at the front of the case in a bay pointing at the cards.
 
fan is at 100% and there is a fan pointed at the front, at the tops of the cards, and a 140mm exhaust fan to the side removing the hot air. I just don't under stand why 3 of the 4 cores would be ok and the one so hot.
 
Maybe you're correct and it's as simple as a poorly applied TIM/heatsink contact.
Have you tried reversing the side fan to intake vs. exhaust towards the cards?

My Antec 1200's side fan is set as a intake towards my 280s/285
 
How are you measuring the temperature? Are you sure the measurement is correct? If so, I would check the heatsink. That's just way too hot.
 
I measured using speedfan and GPU-z and it came up with the same thing. How hard is it to reseat the heat sink on a 9800 gx2?
 
About 14 screws on the back of each card. It's not terribly hard. The airflow in your case is probably suspect. Make sure you have a fan blowing air in at the bottom of your case and one at the top blowing air out. Tweak the airflow in your case you're probably getting pockets of static non moving hot air. I can say this from experience of running 9800 gx2's in the past.
 
Try swopping the placement of the cards.
If one card has a badly attached heatsink, then it wont make any difference where it is, it will still run hot.
If it is static air in the case causeing it to run hot, then the card in the same position will run hot.

My bet is on a badly attached heat sink as only one half of the card runs hot.
Static air would cause both sides to run hot.

So I tried switching them and that didn't help, but it turns out it was just to close to my book case and wasn't able to exhaust the heat completely. I pulled it out and that seems to have dropped the temps alot, but the card that used to have one of the cores at 106c is still running hotter then the other (with the positions switched).
They are now running at, 85c & 81c (card that was running hot before) and 76c & 80c. This is under full load.
Those temps should be fine though right?
 
if the cards are sitting against eachother.. take a piece of paper.. fold it up a crap load of times and stick it between the cards to open a space between them.. it doesnt have to be much.. but it should help with allowing the bottom card to get fresh air..

little trick i stole from a review kyle(i think) did months ago when doing the quad sli with the 9800GX2 cards.. :p
 
also are my temps to high to consider overclocking? or should I just be happy I haven't started a fire yet?
 
yeah sounds about right.. just want enough room in there so the side fan can push cool air between the cards..

Not necessarily. Depending on the location of the PCB board whether it's another gx2 or facing nice open space would screw with the temperature. Though from the original post I doubt it's 24C.
 
how would I go about overclocking the cards? what program do you recommend?
 
Leave the core alone just do the shader.
 
The shaders move in 54 Mhz steps.
Try 1728 Mhz is a good starting value to try, thats what I run my GX2's at.
If that works error free, then up by 54 steps untill it does error out.
If it fails then drop by 54.

I've found that RivaTuner will only overclock one GPU on a reboot.
you need to re-overclock all the other GPU by hand.

yeah theres no need to overclock the GPU unless you go over a certain number on the shader which then the gpu becomes the bottleneck.. but on the 9800GX2 theres no way you could reach that.. on my 8800GT raising my gpu from 600 to 760 only gets me about 85-95 ppd difference.. w/ my shaders at 1890 and raising my memory from 900 to 1015 only gets me about 50 ppd.. so in the end its just not worth the heat increase..
 
I got a bit better results on my 9800GX2 cards.

I know on my 260 that I have OC-ed gained me 1Kppd.
