9700PRO still rockin

I think a good 9600XT can be clocked up to have within 10% the fillrate of a 9700pro. Now assuming that the larger memory interface doesn't make much of a difference, I would say that X600XT and 9600XT might be able to at least take a good swing at the 9700pro.

My 9600xt can take a good swing at a 9700pro...even beat it on some things at res' at or lower than 1024x768....but it seems that 1280x1024 and higher are the cards (9600xt) breaking points. It just can't keep up at resolutions higher than those because it only has 4 pipes. which is fine with me though...as I rarely play anything above 1024x768 anyway.

so yeah...even though the 9600xt can keep up at lower to medium resolutions, the 9700pro would still woop ass at the higher resolutions....

Well, again I only saw one guy potentially bragging who switched it up a bit. Well my $360 GT comes I will be taking the waterblock and turn down the vmods on my 9700, throwing on a VGA silencer and then probably sticking it in an Aria. Sounds like one hell of a plan to me. Obviously I still respect the 9700 enough to build a little new home for it. But no, I dont give two shits about my e-penis! I'm thinking you guys are young or something. I mean shit I took my money out of the bank and I bought the stupid thing. No selling myself on the corner or skipped meals. An adult with a decent job can buy a card like that in 2 or 3 working days. If you stay up a couple nights a week gaming why not?

My system would have been a wet dream a little over a year ago. Now it is beaten like a dog that piddled on the carpet.

I like my 9700 Pro, it still rocks.

I have noticed that most of the threads are about uber-expensive cards. I thinkt that most people on here are either college students, or older people with good careers. The latter is the group with the badass pc's, I think, cause a $400 vid card isn't that much of a stretch in that instance.

Useless, obvious assesment...but that being said :) I'm still very happy with my decision to get the 9700 Pro.

Oh look, another shit slingin' match of "my card's faster than yours".

who gives a rats ass. If the card plays games at resolutions and details/options that are acceptable to YOU, then it's a good card for your needs.

For a card over 2 years old and still kicking the 9700 is no slouch when comes to DOOM 3 and Far Cry.
-Battlefield 1942 (which I mostly play) Very happy
-Sims 2 (wholy shit! runs great)
-COD (Smackdown)

I'd put money on that a 9700Pro could out last newer games in 2005 even. There's nothing it won't run respectably.

Shine on you crazy 9700Pro!!! Shine on!!!

I play doom all the way through on my ATI 9700pro @1024x768 medium details without a hitch. Only Got the 6800gt cuz i have had the 97000pro since the first week they started shipping....felt I was due for an upgrade ya know
But I still bow to the 9700pro gods for such an awsome gaming card....Was top dog in its day and still gives alot of the newer midrange cards one hell of a run for their money!

I'm pretty happy with my 9700 AIW. It plays NASCAR Racing 2003 fine. Little weak on DOOM 3 for my tastes, but it'd probably be fine if I didn't have this 20" LCD.

I'm not unhappy enough to spend $400+ to buy a current video card and another $50 + to replace the TV/Video functionality. Maybe when the X800 AIW is out and down in price, I'll think about upgrading.

I *WISH* I could get a 6800gt...
This 9600xt was probably the worst thing I could have gotten for any kind of longevity. My wife bought it though...so I guess I can't complain too much...yet... :p

unfortunately I have a family that spends my money before I do....

i cant remember who said it but some famous guy from one of the big name studios said " its not going to be the performance that kills the 9700pro, but its features."

The 9700pro was ahead of its time in performance. A truly classic card.

My 6800 GT owns the 9700pro. However, the 9700pro and even the 9500pro still hang in there very very good, and are great cards. If I didn't have money to upgrade, I'd hope I was stuck with one of those 2 cards.

I think it's laid out for us.

16pipe cards = Ultra High end
12pipe cards = High End
8pipe cards with 256bit memory bus or with 400+ clock and memory 128bit = Mainstream
8pipe low clock or memory speed 4 pipe cards = Entry Level

My opinion of course

Nice, I saw this thread and thought it was right up my alley.

I was perfectly happy with my 9700pro, playing UT2K4 and Far Cry. When I saw the numbers with the newest cards on Doom 3, sure I was jealous but since I don't have money to burn I would try and stick with my Raddy.

Me thinks-Wait a minute where are all those threads on Vmods. Surely I can make a juiced up 9700 last until the next generation of vid cards comes out (and ATI is on top again ;) ).

I got all the mods intalled correctly, and quite nicely if I do say so myself. Unfortunately while dialing in the best overclock I slipped while measuring the memory voltages and blasted my memory with 3.3v. (play taps here)

Since I lost my beloved card I had to think of what to do to replace it. Spend about 200 dollars on 9800pro, or upgrade to next gen (6800gt or x800pro vivo) which is twice as fast but unfortunately twice the price.

The happy ending youv'e all been waiting for I tricked my local Best Buy into giving me a 6800gt (with Doom 3, which I hadn't yet purchased) for 299 dollars. Unfortunately the damn Nvidia card wouldn't even run at stock clock speeds. I had to underclock it from 370 to 355 to keep it from locking up. On top of that 3Dmark01 scores wen't down I guess there isn't any performance increase in older Directx8 games.

Oh well I am eagerly awaiting my RMA I hope this one clocks a little better than the last one. Hey anyone want to trade an X800pro VIVO-flashable for a freshly RMA'd 6800gt. Funny thing is I wanted to buy American to show my support for USA over Canada.

Do you have a good enough power supply to handle the GT? I heard you need upwards of a 400w-450w minimum for them...but since I dont actually have a GT, take it with a grain of salt...

yep Iv'e got the Enermax 651 w/ 36A on the 12v rail. I tried two seperate power supply lines with nothing else on them, no luck. Tried more drivers than I care to remember, did a fresh install with sp2 and current chipset drivers, different bios settings that were recommended, nothing worked.

Prolly just a bad core. I hope.

Sure I'll trade you .................. not. :)

I'm really happy with the rest of my system and plan to hold off and upgrade on that hopefully until dualcore processors arrive.

Especially since the latest Intel 915/925 overclock like crap compared to good ole 875/865, and AMD socket 939 is so freaking expensive. A socket 754 with that new DFI board is looking mighty attractive though, but I'll probably wait for the next gen platforms. Probably

Me thinks ----------- where were those Vmods for the IC7

J/k :D :D :D

AAAh. Looks like my beautiful thread about our beloved 9700PROs has been hijacked. But seriously, Thanks for all of the great input guys. I really liked this card and you all have made it clear to me that the community still holds a special place for hardware that can not only raise the bar on preformance and features, but also hold it high for so long.

32 MB PCI Radeon right here!
UT2004 @ 15 FPS in ONS (640x480, all lowest settings)

I'm wishing I had a 9700 Pro ;)

I'm still loving my 9700Pro All in Wonder, with some other mods like the VGA Silencer and some Ramsinks, makes it look sexy :)

Plus the fact that its an all in wonder gives it a little more longevity, perhaps this card can be used in a TV computer in the future, possibly for many years down the road.

By the way, it was a refurb from Newegg a year and a half ago, works just fine.

What could be funny is this, maybe 3 years from now, the 6800GT will be totally obsolete and you still have the 9700Pro AIW as a TV tuner. Who's got the last laugh now huh??? :)

That is true, but how long would it take to change out the coaxial cable layout? There's probably at least several years if anything, so by the time it really is phased out, the card would then definatly be dead (as long with the 6800GT of course :) )
