I have a amd 3200+ 512megs (corsair value select) ram and a 9600pro. Not a screamer but it has treated me well. Bestbuy has the X700pro 256 for 100bux after rebate. I was thinking about splurging and picking up one and bumping to 1gig of ram. Anybody think this would be a decent upgrade? Would cost about $150 after rebates.

I mainly play alot of CS:Source and I just bought Call of Duty 2. Alot of my friends are playing battlefield 2 been thinking about jumping on that as well.

On another note. I always want to buy a card that OCs well (even though i never do it) :( How does the card deal? I havent really researched it yet, just a quick yes/no question.

It's not a bad deal. The X700 should give you more than twice the performance of your 9600pro.

Judging from reviews that I read, the X700 is not a champion overclocker. Basically, the X700 series was ATI's desparate response to Nvidia's 6600 series, so the clocks have been scaled up pretty high to begin with. You never know though, if you're lucky the core might make it as high as 475Mhz+ (which was what the X700XT was clocked at).

with a p4 3.4 and a x700 I was able to play BF2 at 1280x1024 with somewhat low quality settings - pretty good framerates, very playable. It didn't run FEAR very well though at any res.

If at all possible I'd go find a 6600GT- you're only shooting yourself in the foot with antiquated ATi technology (in which I include my X800Pro).

thanks for the help guys. Ended up getting a x800 xl for 130 bux. Figured I couldnt beat it. at least i hope not.

The X800XL's a great card, and at that price it's just a steal. You'll be quite happy with it.

Wow, great price for that card. That should give you 4 times the speed if not more.

i was in the same boat this week, the 9600pro just wasnt up to speed, almost got a 6600gt, but went with an x850 pro for $199. i think we both made wise upgrades :D

how in the world did you get the x800xl for 130?

Ditto.

To the guy who said the x700 cant run fear, I would have to disagree, my x700pro runs it at acceptable rates at like 1024x768, medium quality. Average 37fps. Not great for an FPS, but has worked fine for me so far.

Yeah a X700 will run FEAR and the new stuff it just a matter of how low of a resolution you are willing to use
