9550 or 9600 pro?

This question is for my paranoid friend who will not overclock nor allow me to do so. He asked me what's a good video card for around $70 and those are the two I got stuck on.

P.S.-There are 256 Mb versions of these cards that don't cost much more. Are they worth it?
 
256MB will only help you if you play at high resolutions with all the graphical settings turned up. I don't think you're going to be doing that with a sub-$100 card. :p

The Radeon 9550 uses the same core as the 9600 Pro, but it's clocked down to Radeon 9200 clock speeds. So the performance of a 9550 should be between 9200 and 9600 level. A Radeon 9600 Pro would certainly be a better buy than a 9550.
 
The cheapest 9550 card with 128-bit wide bus that I could find is this Gigabyte GV-R955128D 9550 for $52, delivered. It has VGA, DVI, and S-VHS outputs. No fan (does't need it).

I've read that some 9600 Pro cards aren't really Pro cards, something about the GPU clock being slow.

Yea I noticed the Gigabyte but didn't wanna recommend it for two reason. One being I don't trust Gigabyte, the other being it's cooling is entirely passive, and my friend has a crappy dell case with absolutely no fans. I think I'm going to recommend him the 9600Pro, thanks guys.
