A friend gave me a 9500pro for free that he didn't want anymore. He recently got a 9800pro. He told me that this card doesn't work, and it has been flashed/overclocked by a previous owner.

I put it in and booted to Windows. Contrary to what my friend told me, anything 2D seems to be working fine. I install the latest drivers, and fire up a game. Very distrorted image. I'm getting horrizontal lines, some tv-static like textures, while others seem fine, but they constantly switch as I move. Also getting some large black triangles appearing. In FPS games, if I get close to a wall, then it looks 90% fine, but look anywhere into the distance, and everything goes to hell. I tried both D3D and OGL games, both having similar problems. I reinstalled a few other versions of the Catalyst drivers, and no change. I even used the ATI overclocking utility to try under-clocking the card.

Like I said, I was given this card, so if it truely is dead I lose nothing, but it would be nice if I could get it to work, even at a slower-than-stock speed. I was told the previous owner had flashed the card, but I couldn't get any details. I just figured I'd ask if anyone had any ideas of a way to save this card from being just a cool looking paper weight. Is there a way to find out what Bios is currently on the card, and whether or not that is the stock one or not? I'm assuming it's pretty dead, but if I tossed it aside and later realized it could have been saved I would be kicking myself later.

I suppose I could always just install it in my computer during finals week or something to eliminate the temptation to play when my friends start joining my SoF2 server...

The BIOS will be displayed very quickly before you see your actual motherboard POST screen. Disable any full screen logos, if applicable. Also, I'm sure utilities like PowerStrip or even the default Windows drivers under "Advanced" can show you the BIOS. Also, there's a dickload of ATI tweak utilities, one of those might detect the BIOS version.

My RCOA: Reflash to stock BIOS and try again. If something goes wrong, I understand booting with a PCI video card, with the AGP in the slot will allow you to reflash a "dead" AGP card. You may need to put in a working AGP card, and tell the BIOS to use the PCI display first, or you may not. I've never done this, but I'll share what I know!

He probably broke one of resistors off or something or else it wouldn't do that.

My guess is, it was flashed from a 9500 non-pro and has defective pipelines.

Look for other bios on net, you can find many out there for that card. I used to have it my self. Since you have nothing to lose, try flashing the bios with any others you can find for that card. You might get lucky. Look up the model number or fcc number and make sure it is a pro. Also might want to look at heatsink and see if its been played with, Might want to take off and apply a fresh coat of artic silver or somthing
