i found a 970 processor for less than $600 do you guys think is it worth to upgrade my very old 920 to the 970?

Depends on your workload, for gaming you are only talking a 20% or so increase (assuming neither processor is overclocked, ymmv if overclocking) at best (if you are GPU bottlenecked you may see no increase at all) which is IMO not worth it. On the other hand for highly multithreaded tasks you are talking an 80% or so increase which may be worth it if your time is valuable enough.

thanks all.
what about just using the net, multimedia, everything but games?

For browsing the web and watching videos you can get by on a Core 2 Duo! No need for a hexacore!

Actually, the current new pricing on the Core 2 Duos are all rather penny-foolish (or put it this way, too expensive for such outdated and nearly-totally-obsolete parts). An AMD system would have delivered a much better performance-to-price ratio than any of those Core 2 Duos.

How about a larger screen, better video card, speakers, headphones, etc before wasting big bucks on a small upgrade like that?

I find it hard the the 920 is lagging you. If so why not overclock it?

AMD has 6 core CPU's for 199.99 and below, but yeah I guess 599.99 is an amazing CPU price when you take into account it's an (INTEL first and foremost). Then factor in the whopping price to performance scaling, you know... when it comes to Intel 6 cores! They can't be beat! EVAR! You know you need 2 extra frames per second in some game you already get 200+ frames per second in ;)

970 price just dropped to sub $500
The 1k unit price is now $583, so you're not going to see any sub $500 i7-970s unless Microcenter starts doing their loss-leader promos on them(which is certainly possible but I wouldn't count on it)).

U jelly?

Unless you're doing video editing or video encoding, you're not going to notice a different.
Most desktop stuff is single threaded (or has multiple threads much only one doing anything significant at a time which amounts to the same thing) so won't really benefit much from beyond two cores (two is helpful because it means if one app hogs a core the others still have something to go at).

The exceptions tend to be batch type operations like 3D rendering (the non-realtime non-gpu variety). video encoding, compiling software etc. Even there though you have to be careful what software you use as not all is capable of supporting multiple cores

If you are trying to improve general desktop performance then if you have not already done so going SSD is a very good idea. Also check you aren't running into limits of your ram and if you are add more.

I'm not saying he should rush out to buy a Core 2 Duo, rather that a C2D would handle web browsing and watching videos with ease.

Well really, if all you're going to do is watch video and browse the web... the 920 should easily last you 5+ years without a hiccup or lag. You really don't even need what you have now heh, you could even sell it and get a $100 cheaper system.... then go buy a nice mouse and keyboard, strippers, or something else like that :)

thanks. i was thinking on selling and buying an imac, but no. i have too much $ invested on my pc. i am getting the 970.

Those 2 extra cores would help in folding:)
Absolutely!

Get that Hexacore! But seriously, it would be a waste of processing power with what you wish to accomplish. Unless, you want to buy it for me. :p

MidpostEditDueToLazinessandNotWantingtoRewordAnything: Well, seems like you are getting the 970. Start Folding for the [H]orde. :D
