920 or 965

If you had the money would you pick up the 965 over the 920? I really am having a hard time deciding. I don't need it for what I do, some gaming, little encoding, nothing crazy.

I went crazy with my last built with an FX-53 and X800XT, which was over four years ago and it held up pretty good, except for gaming. However right around that time they switched over to pci-e so my upgrades have been limited. Only thing I ever upgraded in those four years was 2GB of DDR and installed Vista.


These are the builds I am trying to decide on...

Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D
Asus P6T Deluxe
300GB VelociRaptor
1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
4870x2

or

i7 965EE
Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D x2
Asus Rampage II Extreme
300GB VelociRaptor
1TB Western Digital Caviar Black
4870x2 (prob add a second when needed)


So go all out and be happy for 4 years or so, or just get the 920 OC it and upgrade again in two years. What would you do?
 
In 2 years time, you can simply drop in a new 1366 chip and it'll be faster than a 965EE and probably be cheaper too.

I'd pick the 920 setup.
 
Well, I picked the 965.... thought long and hard about the 920... but I want a setup I don't need to OC. I am big time enthusiast so cost typically is not a concern of mine. I did skimp on the memory a bit going with the Corsair TR3X6G1600C9D for a mear $18 cheaper and N.E. did not have the 8D version 5 days ago when I made my purchase. I don't think I will see a huge diff.... I ultimately want the TR3X6G1866C9DF set with a fan.. but I can wait on that. If you plan OCn your box and love taking the time to tweak and really learn how your system works, then go with the 920. Then again, if you are just an average user, you may be satisfied with the 920 with stock settings...

I changed my mind.... picked up 12gb of TR3X6G1600C8D. Putting my other crap on eBay tomorrow. :rolleyes:
 
Well I def like to mess with the system but I am not an overclocking wizard, never really had much luck. I also don't really like pushing the system because it is my only rig and once its up and running stable, I usually never touch tweak anything again.

The difference between the systems is a $1000. Got to sit down and figure out if its cheaper to build an expensive rig every 4 years or keep upgrading every year to two years depending on what hits the market. Ugh i'm so indecisive about this crap.

Although I finally bit the built and bought an NEC 2490WUXI and I'm lovin it....lol.
