i built my system months ago, it went 3 months error free. all of a sudden one day system shut itself down because of over heating. first i replaced cpu (amd xp 2800+) from dealer in case cpu was damaged. changed case to mge ninja w/450w psu and added three 80mm case fans. rebuilt today booted up and cpu temp was at 80c. system temp at 26c. after on for five minutes and cpu temp rising system shut itself down. any ideas on why the cpu is 80c at boot up? any suggestions? i changed all parts (hardware) to fix problem. didn't work. only piece not changed was mobo. can cpu overheat from mobo?

well make sure the heatsink is tight on the cpu, and that the hsf is running (heatsink fan). The mobo might be the problem though, possibly. how old is the motehrboard?

Try reseating the heatsink on the cpu, and use AS5. I hope this might help

thanks,
i used the thermal paste that came wit hsf. the fan speed was 2700. mobo is less than year old. it's the only one i have therefore i have no way to test if it is bad by using different one.

reseat and reapply the thermal paste. Make sure you arnt using to much paste. Also if you have another way of detecting the temp it might help, it is quite possible that the sensor on the motherboard is off.

if all else fails buy a crappy ass mobo for like 25 from newegg and see if switching the cpu to that one does the trick. then you know it's the mobo and buy a new one, put a cheap cpu in the crap board and sell it to an annoying family member :D
