Hey all,

Non-tech savvy friend's current HP Inkjet printer is dying a slow death, dropping the wireless, failing to print even when connected via USB, smudges appearing on printed photos when it does work, etc. Their old router is overheating and dropping wireless and wired connections.

They have already purchased a TP-Link AC2600 MU-MIMO router based on my recommendation so that is taken care of. The printer is all that remains to be purchased.

Can anyone recommend a printer which properly supports 802.11AC?

Thanks in advance. :)

Wireless isn't stable and connecting printers over wifi is a bad idea in general. Get a decent network printer and connect it using ethernet.

Most wireless printers work on N or G. There isn't much need for supporting AC on a low bandwidth device like a printer. And AC has worse range than 2.4GHz connections so it may be less reliable for printer duties.

I've literally NEVER had any issues at all printing on wireless printers over the past 4 years. Absolutely non.

With that said. They probably don't make an AC wireless printer. So grab one based on G or N. It'll still work with your router/access point.

I'm rocking a Epson WF-3640, but it's an inkjet printer. How often do they print and what are they printing? A laser jet might be better suited for them.

While I do have an AC router my old wireless printer a Canon PIXMA will not except wireless printing from any device that is not on the same network. Consequently, I must disconnect from the 5G AC network and reconnect to a 2.4 G wireless in network before I can print from my iPhone or my laptop.
I don't want to run another ethernet cable to my bedroom as I already have one and it looks terrible. I think my only other option would be to get a hub but I am not sure if I have the current Canon printer connected via ethernet that I can use air print or other options and not have to switch off the 5G network.
There is a very nice printer at Walmart, I think it is a Epson, that has a auto duplex feature for both printing and scanning and has multiple trays. And it only cost about $110. As I have started to scan many of my documents to reduce clutter in my house, I would really appreciate having a duplex scan her instead of having to take out documents and turn them over and hope for the best. Alas that printer only as wireless n as its maximum connections. Perhaps it would be easier to switch between wireless networks on that. On the Canon it is a bit of a hassle as the system tries to auto connect and the method of entering passwords etc. is cumbersome. I love the Canon printer though. It's easy to remove jams when you get them and it has been very reliable.
