bought a 7900GTO and was wondering about the stock cooler. Looks really nice with heatpipes and cools much better than I thought (in cooling and in silence). I am having no problem overclocking the core, but having issues overclocking the memory.

I reseated the core with artic silver, but what can I do about the memory? There is thermal tape between the memory and the heatsink that I had to separate to get the cooler off. I replaced the tape with what was there. I would like to use the stock cooler, how can get better cooling for the memory?

It would be simpler to buy a new heatsink(preferably the Zalman VF-900) than to modify the stock one to use your own RAMsinks. Short of those two possibilities, there's really nothing you can do.

Also, have you considered that the RAM may already be at its maximum? What have you managed to overclock it to? Also please provide the stock speed, I don't remember it offhand and I'm too lazy to Google it right now.

I did think about buying the Zalman, and I might still. I think the stock cooler is nice, and wanted to keep it for a change. For the record, I always get aftermarket cooling. Adds to the cost considerably.

I did think the memory was at max, but check it out. I have the 1.1ns memory (as everyone else). Sure I could have gotten a bad overclocker, thems the breaks.

Stock 630/660 (core/memory in 3D as reported by ATItools)

Overclock 780/800 (once again in AtiTools).

I was wondering if there is easy way to "reseat" the thermal compound (you know the double sided sticky stuff) between the memory and the heatsink? I think that is the issue.

Unfortunately, there really isn't anything you can do about the thermal pads. That RAM speed is the stock GTX speed, so it is possible you hit the limit.

As for the heatsink, I reccomended the Zalman because it comes with RAMsinks, which I don't think the Thermalright one comes with. If it does, the Thermalright is probably better.

keep the stock cooling,
that 7900gtx cooling is one of the best stock coolings ever made
its so great it is also used on the high end parts of the quadro series

If anyone knows of a way to change the fan settings, I'd love to know. I've tried Riva Tuner, NVTweak and ATI tools. None of them show the option for this card.

Really nice Core Clocks. Very few are seeing great results out of the mem on this cards. I have two, one does 730/830 and the other one does 750/810. I'm still tweaking away but I think RivaTuner is a better OC tool for nVidia cards. Just my .02 You might hitting your mem full potential. There is really no need for aftercooling cooling for these cards, stock cooling is just as good.

780/800 and you're complaining?!!!? LOL that is a great OC!

Alright, I was wondering about that. I guess I truely do not understand the nomenclature behind the numbers. Is my overclock analagous to someone who has 780/1600?

I see that number with 4 digits and wonder if I received a bad overclocker?

And that thermalright HR-03 is dead sexy, but I will stick with the stock cooler.

800 = 1600

So far I'm at 710/815 Riva giving me error anything higher. Think I hit wall.... Don't know what memory I have not do I believe I will do the Bios flash.
