Well its time to update my gfx card once again i have always been and ATI fan as all thier cards have served me well. But have heard the new 7800 GTX is the best on the shelves. Should i get the 7800GTX or stay with ATI and get an ati card that is the same price and just as good or better if one exists.??
please help

There's been so many threads regurgitating the exact same thing. Look them up.

But for repition, the nVidia's are cheapest for the high end performance, the ATi's X1800XT's aren't available yet, and the 2d and AF quality is slightly superior on the ATi cards. Both have shimmering...

Et Cetera. Do some research...

looks like the 7800 gtx is still king for now, even beats the 1800xt in most scenarios, just check out the review link on the main [H] page.

And it's already out and cheaper.

The GTX is the best on the shelves because the X1000 cards aren't on them. The most we have seen is X1800XLs being sold, but no XTs (which could quite possibly be a better al round card than GTX) and as far as I know the X1300s and X1600s aren't on the shelves either.

So yes the GTX is the king of the hill until at least stores stocking more XLs and the other X1000 cards.

Look around, read the reviews, and buy the best you can afford.. :D Right now the 7800gtx is the fastest thing actualy AVAILABLE... A month or 2 from now that may not be the case.. If your buying today go with the gtx.. If you can wait a bit, the 1800xt may be what your looking for.. Seems to perform faster in some games and slower in others compared to the 7800gtx, in other words on par.. But it is not available yet and is likely to cost more for a little while after it is released..

I've been looking into upgrading also and been looking at scores
for the past month.

To be honest, I'm not happy with what I see. You see next generation
games averaging low in frames per second in 1600x1200 mode
with AA/AF, using a high end computer. For a $500 video card
don't you expect better? I know I do. Even some games with 90FPS
can have 30FPS during busy areas of games. You can't play well
with 30FPS. Games averaging 30-60FPS, probably drops to 10FPS
under heavy load. The only decent benchmarks I've seen is
SLI 7800GT, SLI GTX only gave you maybe 10% more FPS, not
worth it. Who wants to spend $740 for a dual video card just to
have smooth gameplay at high rez ?

I'm probably going to wait to see what Nvidia releases since they
seem to be ahead of the curve and ATI is playing catchup, ie
Nvidia probably has another trick up their sleeve, perhaps SLI
on the die {dual core GT SLI} on 90nm with perhaps increase in
clock speed. It would be interesting if they can release such
a beast by March.

Thanks for the help. I will probably be getting the gfx card during the christmas time hopefully the sales shud decrease the price a bit. I havent heard anything of the new ATI cards and they will take a while to get to new zealand and even then they will cost a heap so i think i will either be going with 2x SLI 6800 or 7800 gtx most likely.
