I thought it was a problem with WoW since I had been playing COD2 all week at 445/1070 fine and actually got a nice little FPS boost for the mean time on myGigabyte 7800GT. Was going to go to around 470/1100 and then playing WoW yesterday I got BSOD related to video card. I thought WTF at first so I tried reloaded the drivers and loading beta drivers. Put the clock speed back to stock settings of 400/1000 and bam everything ran fine.

Then I tried an easy clock of 425/1050. I looped 3dmark and about 2 hours into the test I was greeted with the BSOD. Temps are great at around 44 C and never higher than 55 C when I had it at 445/1070 playing COD2, albeit not stable in other things.

Since the card is a little over a month I was debating sending it back. Granted the card does what it is suppose to do, but I feel no reason with the Zalman it should not be getting at least better than most other stock cooling 7800GTs. Was thinking about the volt mod, but then I feel that if the card can not do a 25 mhz core overclock on stock voltage, nothing would help it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

With overclocking you'll find that some hardware simply won't respond!
Sending it back because it won't overclock is irresponsible. The product is functioning as it should at stock clocks - if you wanted a faster board you should've bought a GTX. If you happen to get some free MHz, that's the joy of overclocking, however there are no guarantees.
Your only hope is better cooling and voltmodding, which will most definitely void your warranty.

Good luck with your attempts, but stay ethical!

I have my EVGA 7800GT CO running 485/1150 right now with zero issues. GPU core temp only raised 1 degree from stock 470/1100. Not pushing it any further than that, but I dunno why you can't get your to even do stock CO speeds. I agree with consumer though, sending it back because it won't OC isn't the coolest thing to do.

Thank you consumer9000 for your input. However, I must say that I do not feel irresponsible. In fact, I am sending the card back. The reason I am sending the card back at the moment is not related to overclocking. Just last night the card started giving me BSOD and garbled video even at stock clocks.

Regarding the input of overclocking I think on this forum you will find that there is a large majority of people sending items back for similar reasons. In fact some of the advice on this forum is to buy products because of their overclocking potential.

For instance look at the Dell FPW monitors. Countless people have sent monitors back to Dell for backlighting. You have to consider weather people even noticed the backlighting until they read it on the internet. I sure know I did not. Now getting back to the video card, if Gigabyte can decide to slap on a better cooling device and for what reason? Overclocking I must assume. Also while other manufactors can sell the same card overclocked with a slight lesser heatsink and fan combination.

I must assume that if the card can not even operate out side of the margin of a few mhz the card is inferior to other brands? I would not think Gigabyte to carry that image.

You throw any ramsinks on those memory chips? Its pretty stupid they left them out...

You try just upping the core and leaving the memory at stock?

I hit a brick wall around 485/1100 on my card which is kind of weak.

That's kinda funny. The first, and only, OC I tried was to 485/1130. Worked fine from the get go, have had no problems. Don't really care to go much higher. I think an increase in Mem clock is going to be negligable at best and I doubt the GPU has much steam left.

you're being irresponsible if the card doesn't overclock like expected, and due to that you want to rma. Overclocking is a crapshoot, sometimes you get good shit, sometimes you don't. And to everyone else that send things back because they dont oc like expected but work fine at stock, well, they're asshats. People that send back perfectly fine products actually help contribute to raising prices. If you wanted a gt, you should have gotten a higher clocked one, like evga's which is stock at 470

he said he's not returning it for those reasons. Read up a few posts. Though I agree with you on your theory of the "asshat" and RMAs.

The question is...
is your video card giving you bad display because of your OC attempts?

No matter..

PSUs can be defective too. Afterall, you're telling us that a $300.00 card is defective right?

I understand, I was referring to his first post. Not working at stock clocks is a viable reason to rma though

i didn't read most of the post or thread, but to be honest, the oc doesn't really make that much of a difference. my evga is clocked at 445/1.07. when overclocked to 490/1.17(slight artifacting) i got a whole 300 3dmarks (maybe 3 fps?). it's just not worth it. at most, you're losing a little over 5 frames vs somebody who overclocked. do you think that paying shipping will really be worth the 5% overclock?

Got an RMA with Newegg, but I manage to fix the problem at stock settings with a driver rollback. Not going to send it back.I still stand on my issue with overclocking and that many people on this forum based their decisions on what others have achieved. Have not tried overclocking since although I was examining my 3dmark05 and 06 scores and it says that my card was running 486 core and 1070 memory. I get the memory, but the highest I overclocked the core in coolbits was 445. How does it show up as 486?

Does it have anything to do with the 27 mhz thing. I can not remember it is late, but I remember somewhere reading something about setting the card in increments of 27 mhz. Can not remember why since I have a Drugs and Society quiz in the morning, my brain is fried.

I got ahold 300 too, but around 1000 marks in 3dmark05. Most importantly I was getting stutters on COD2 and when I had it OCed I was getting no stutters. I would say at least 10 fps, but I never ran fraps and eyes can not tell. All I know is it ran smoother. No placebo.

That is from 3dmark. I have had 3dmark03 report incorrect clocks, just do not know why 05 and 06 report the same core of 486?
