I give it a 9, I am now more impress by the performance at the highest resolutions on the most gpu demanding game...WOW twice the performance of my 6800ultra... looks like we have a winner here... (until the 7800ultra and ati's r520 offering comes at least) the onhly drawback is the price :)

I like the power consumption and single slot cooler.

At least they finally broke the trend of bigger and hotter.

So in a year or so, maybe I'll get a 7800 and stick it in a SFF as my main PC. Or my dream would be something like a dual CPU Iwill SLI SFF. Have you seen those... imagine 2 x 4400 X2 (=4 processors) and 2x 7800 in SLI all in a SFF!!

For now, I'll hold on to my OC'd 3.4Ghz Northwood with OC'd 6800GT. Which performs like a 3.46 EE with 6800 Ultra.

If you are upgrading from an X850XTPE - Awesome
If you are upgrading from a 6800U - Very Good

I voted for Very Good :)

What? The XT/PE is a faster card, it would be less of an upgrade than the 6800U.

I gave it a B. If it had 512 memory, I would have given it an A. Or if it was like it is, but $500, I would have given it an A.

Very solid card, just dont like the $600 tag. :(

XTPE is faster, but it would be more of an upgrade because instead of just a performance boost, you are getting a performance boost, SM3.0, and FP16 HDR. Looking at the benchmarks a 6800U owner doesn't really need the performance of the 7800GTX for next-gen games, but an X850XTPE owner will need the featureset of the 7800GTX for next-gen games if they want to use all of the IQ options. Hence a bigger upgrade.

Gave it a B. Awesome features and performace. The pricing is just too damn high. $500+ for any video card is asinine.

as more manufactures get cards out the price will come down.

its simple supply and demand and we are on day 1.

now that I think about it, the price is actually VREY good for a day 1 card. You remember how nVidia used to launch things and what they used to cost on day 1? I saw the 6800 Ultra going for 600+ dollars easy. But yeah I agree, I want the price down.

I vote Very Good. Even though it's a wonderful card, for the price difference between them, it's not that big of a jump from the 6800GT/Ultra.

Yeah but that was because of price gouging, you could still the get 6800 U at places like chumbo at the MSRP of 500, whereas the MSRP of the 7800 is 600 dollars. Its going to be while before these prices begin to drop, but a lot of us are waiting.

Overall decent card, with great performance at the high end resolutions. If you are running such high resolutions, and can afford the price tag its not bad. Still though for many of us the performance increase and feature increase do not warrant the high price tag. Since its bascially just a rehashed NV40 core.

for the short term prices willl be high due to lack of supply and high demand.

After about 1 month prices should come down just a little bit as most of the initial gouging is over with and within 3 months i would guess prices should drop a bit.

also as more 7800 models are introducted prices should become more affordable.

not to mention future driver releases will boost performance even more.

anyone try out the new drivers? i am using the beta 77.62 and they are very good for desert combat. i'm feeling some nice improvements.

The MSRP is $600. Yes it should drop, but it wont change the MSRP price.

Perhaps to you. Without lowing the res to the 90's level (1024x768) its not playable to me on a 6800U, so its worthless to me. And thats just a handful of games. The 6800U cant play these games, in playable frames to me, at my res.

I voted okay, its not that much of an increase, but the price is. I have a X850XTPE and that thing costs $150 more than I paid. I will admit that I paid too much for agraphics card, but I wanted the best card for my setup (AGP) I got it hands down. I invested alot now, so I wont 6-8months down the road.
The step up from the 6XXX series is not that big and in my opinion not worth it (now, at $400 maybe). I liked the gap between the 5XXX and 6XXX, now that was worth it.

My next comp wont even see this new nVidia card because by the time I build another this will be 2 series ago. I think I will be in the Geforce 9xxx market next time around.

I make my investiment decisions based on who has the best card for my money, and how long am I going to be able to hold onto it for. I will be contempt with my X850XTPE for a while, I dont think I could say that about a 6800GT (my other choice) and I couldnt spend the same money on a Ultra and get (IMHO) less preformance.

I give it a B very impressive, but it doesn't quite blow me away and make me want to buy one right away either. The one thing that I really like about it is the SSAA performance, but it is not quite worth $600 USD to get alpha textures AAed.

i think nvidia did a great job so far with this launch. i can't wait for the releases of the more "mainstream" versions of this architecture.

I will be comming from a platform with a 9700 Pro... So I think this is an outstanding Card for my New system.

Very impressive architecture. The transparency AA is just what we need right now. As more shader-intensive games come out, the speed advantage will become more apparent. Not to mention that we haven't seen how overclockable it is yet, as it's running at a pretty high temp at stock.

For those complaining about pricing, just wait until the rest of the lineup comes out at more affordable pricepoints. We could possibly get GTX speeds for $100+ less.

I give it an A. Overall computer prices have fallen so much compared to what we used to get for the money 10 years ago. :)

unimpressed. I gave it an 'ok'. Not worth upgrading to from the 6800 series imo.

Utter failure!

someone is a jealous fannie... dont bring that BS over here... keep it in your own forums...

i gave it an A, simply because they got it IN STOCK the second it was actually released which is a miracle in itself, AND because quite frankly, it beats the shit out of all of its current competition :)

and DONT call me a fannie... i swing both ways when it comes to graphics cards (havent had an matrox / xgi experience :p )

Wow... what people fail to realize that there's absolutely no price gouging at the moment. The MSRP is $600, they are selling it for $600... it won't drop below MSRP anytime soon.

B
+ It puts out a more performance than 2x 6800gt SLI set up
+ single slot design
+ New Features!!!!

- INSANE PRICE
- Not as much improvement as we all were expecting

But the article get an A!

The biggest draw back is the card's length.
My 6800 GT is already really close to my hard drive cage.

I like that this card uses less Wattage and its performance looks really nice.
I still want to wait and see the new stuff from ATI before I buy a new card.
I still think CrossFire will be the way to go.

Great for people who hung onto their 95-96-97-9800 or 58-5900 series.

Not worth it IMHO if you already own 6800GT or better. Maybe early 6600 buyers who have come into some money. :)

I gave it a B...

Transparency AA and lots more shader horsepower is awesome...not to mention less power consumption and a single slot cooler...

However, I'm slightly disappointed with the core and memory clocks...they could have done much better IMHO (maybe the ultra is still out there somewhere)...

A. Great speed, perfomance rivaling a 6800U SLI setup for $300 less than the SLI setup. Can't beat that with a stick IMO.

Excellent upgrade path for anyone transitioning from AGP to PCI-e since it beats the 850XT and the 6800U SLI and it falls in between both in terms of pricing. $450 for the 850XT, $900 for 6800U SLI, better gaming performance than both so the $150 increase in price over the ATI card nets you S.M. 3.0 plus a bunch more A.A. options and for less money than the SLI setup you get better performance along with lower heat and less wattage required.

It'll be interesting to see ATI's answer to this card and the price point it occupies.

'B' for me, for reasons already cited.

Chaps at the [H] get an 'A' for the kickass article - as always thorough & very well presented - thank you.

I'll need a platform upgrade before anything else, so will be sticking with my 6800U perhaps until next gen. Presuming that I can help myself :D

It's a catch-22. What good is more core when memory is the bottleneck? And what good is faster memory when it's expensive as hell right now?

I voted OK. Although I was very impressed by TSAA and the BF2 performance, the potential bandwidth issues have me very leary of buying into it at the current asking price of $600.

overall i think its quite good after you read the reviews about nvidia tweaking almost all aspects of the card.

33% more vertex shaders
50% more pipelines.
30 more mhz

and some brands are going to overclock to 60mhz..
and overclock 100mhz more on the memory like bfg.

i really like it.
cant afford it... but i like it.

im about to go into the military anyway so really no point in ditching my 6800 right now.
