75 refresh bad for lcds?

I got my 12 ms sony lcd. Its locked at 60Hz If i turn it up to 75 will it hurt my monitor? I only ask because i play games with vsync and i want more frames. Thanks :)
 
I run all my LCD's at 75, no problems at all. In fact, talking to the people at MonitorsDirect they actually reccomend it. Not sure it will help your FPS much, but it does improve my picture quality a bit.

I have the same monitor but it only lists all of the resolutions at 60HZ. Can it support >60hz? If so what is the difference?
 
I have my LG 19" running at 75Hz .. I just made a custom setting and I personally see a improvement in game play and overall better picture and just a side not i'm using dvi not the vga
 
if it doesn't allow you to set it higher, its probably because it doesn't support it... but try it anyways... if it doesn't work, all it would say is that it is out of sync... (then it would autodefault to 60hz)
 
I just unlocked it and changed it to 75hz. It looked like it worked, but under the on screen menu it still said 1280x1024x60HZ, so I don't know if it actually will work?

enable vsync and check what FPS you're cap'ed at.
 
There isn't really any benefit to running an LCD greater than 60Hz. No LCD available has the response time to render even 60 complete, distinct (meaning no trace of the previous frame) frames without some degree of frames blending into each other, which would make the response time the limiting factor. Depending on your definition of ghosting, there will be at least motion blur. This happens even with 16ms displays because the ms rating is a range of values and not a uniform number, so some color transitions take several times longer. Rated ms itself can't always be taken literally, as there are different standards of testing and measuring between manufacturers.

An LCD cannot guarantee 60 individual frames per second unless it has a response time fast enough to cover the extreme cases where midtone shifts take 50ms or more to changeover. This would require a response time of more like 4-6 ms, because if a 4ms LCD takes 2-3 times as long to change a hypothetical color, it will still be 8-12ms, well below what is needed for 60fps. A 16ms screen needing that long, however, would take 32-48ms, which is not fast enough to draw at true 60 fps. In this case, some or all of the pixels will still remain in the previous frame's state for some amount of time into the next frame(s). At this point, it defeats the purpose to increase your frame rate further since you are already redrawing the screen as fast as it possibly can, which still isn't enough to render all 60 frames completely and fully (though people with slower eyes probably might not notice a thing, especially on a fast moving game where the slowness of their eyes blurs the action anyway). This is what causes ghosting and motion blur, and why some people will see it even with 12ms rated displays. If the 12ms was uniform for every possible color change, this wouldn't be the case (you would get 1000/12ms=83 frames a sec). In the future, not only should ms ratings go down, but the range of response may go down as well, meaning that a display that used to take 4 times as long to display a hypothetical color, might now take only 3.

So while a 16ms screen might yield 16ms in some circumstances, it can't across all possible color transition combinations. So if you're thinking of running your LCD at 75Hz, you can, but know it won't look any faster because while it might receive the signal to redraw the next frame every 1/75th second instead of 1/60th second, the pixels would already have not been able to catch up well before then.
 
well 75 hz doesn't yeild any benefits, but it doesn't cause damage either... its more like a "mental" thing that makes you feel that it is going faster...

I have 5 LCD's and found on the less expensive ones I got a better picture, very noticable. On my 213t and Envision 9110 (DVI input) it made a smaller difference, but it was quite noticable. Running Doom at 60 and 75 shows Doom slightly sharper on both units.

Just one guys opinion..give it a shot ;)

Just disable "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" and reset it.

I am new to desktop lcd's.. But by pushing the refresh rate from say 60 (monitor standard) to 75-80, there are no long term consequences? I am looking at purchasing a benQ fp231w and playing doom 3 with a nividia geforce 6800 ultra.. (don't want to wreck the monitor since it'll cost enough).

worse comes to worse, u will c a error message on the screen telling u that the refresh rate is too high, and it will revert to 60 hz
