7300GT SLI Question

I purchased a pair of eVGA 7300GT 512MB DDR2 PCI-E video cards and connected them in SLI mode. Recently one of them has stopped working. No video past the Windows boot screen when connected together, when installed separately in the system one works perfect and the other has lines running through the display. I've heard that eVGA has a great RMA policy, but I'm not the original buyer. I'm looking to replace the defective unit, but am having difficulty locating an exact match. I've seen where other's have used the same series cards from different makers (ie - PNY and XFX), but was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to use the same card, but with different RAM amounts. The eVGA 7300GT 128MB cards are easily obtained from eBay for around $10 (my budget for this). It looks to be the exact same card I have, the only difference being the amount of memory. I doubt I was ever fully utilizing the full 1GB of GDDR with my 20" WS LCD, so dropping to 640MB is fine with me. I just want to be sure the cards will be compatible for SLI. Help is appreciated!

Sounds like a guy I knew that got a "gaming" computer with two 8400s in SLI

what is the main use of that computer?

Win7 RC1 test rig and my first attempt at SLI. Idea was to keep the cost low (m/b, cpu, ram and both vid cards totaling under $100).

Better question is why all the posts without relevant information? If anyone knows the answer I'd appreciate help please.

You don't total the memory with an SLI configuration, you had 512MB of RAM for each card not 1GB total. Since they are both rendering the same scene they have to have the same copies of information.

The 128MB card may work, but if it does your 512mb card will run like a 128mb card in SLI mode.

You'd be way, way better off buying a more modern $20 card even.

Here is the exact answer: http://www.slizone.com/page/slizone_faq.html#c19

Yes you can, with a manual setting change. You will be limited to a 128MB memory though. You really don't want to do that.

Just throw both 7300gts in the trash bin and get something newer.

If you RMA that card, the card you get in return will be incredibly superior to 7300 in SLI.

So this is the 7300GT 128MB you're asking whether you should bid on?

Do this, or this, or this, or this instead. Any of those will blow away the 7300GT SLI, and you're just as likely to get them for $10.

lol, I think even a lowly 9400GT will be two of those things in SLI.

If you're gaming, it's sooo time for an upgrade. Even $80 can get you a 9600GT.

the amount of ram needs to be the same as far as I know. But what we are trying to figure out is why you would sli them when there are many single cards at or under $100 that would out peform that sli setup? If you were doing graphic work or somthing that required a large frame buffer or somthing then I can see why you may want to do this. But, those cards are way past end of life due to newer technology and efficiencies.

If you are gaming, on your 20" lcd, then a radeon 4850 512mb would do very well for you but, you need a decent psu to run that card. If you are a moderate gamer then maybe somthing like a radeon 4670 512mb would get the job done(*but not as much aa and af enabled) without requiring a psu upgrade.

I hope this helps.
