UPDATE: my computer now runs fine, I have linked the incident to the cold cathode lights-I tested them in another pc and they didnt work...which leads me to believe that the little power-inverter box must have crapped out, and possbily shorted-circuited causing my pc, causing it to shut down. Does that sound possible?

I knew I shoudnt have bought those $6 cold cathodes...

That sounds about right. If it does short the PSU instantly turns off.

And for good reason, too. PSU shutdown has saved my ass a few times.
