If you're just dropping in a new proc, all you do is take it out and place the new one into the socket.

I'm assuming you use an Intel proc. All you have to do is remove the heatsink/fan from the socket. Now, raise the CPU retention arm (the latch), and the CPU should be raised out of the socket. Now just take it out and put the new one into the ZIF. Close the socket latch, replace heatsink.

The only problem that might arise is with the HT part. If you build a system with a non-HT processor, and then later drop one in, it may be unstable, or require that you disable HT in your BIOS and run crippled. I'd recommend a reformat and install at that point. If the procs are identical, except for maybe speed...like your going from a 2.4C to a 3.0C, then no, just drop it in.

When the system starts booting and posting, it should say 'Press <so and so key> to enter BIOS.'

I think Asus mobos are the Delete key, but the most common keys are F1, F2, and Delete.

you're lucky to own a P4 cpu... if you had an Atlhon XP you'd have to be very cautious when taking off/ putting on HSF...

Dont forget to check the specs on your motherboard to see what cpu's can be used.

I just upgraded a friends machine with a P4 2.6c, asus mobo, and some ram and the machine POST's really really fast.
You have to hit the delete key almost as soon as you turn it on.

yeah, and uninstall the processor from device manager before you upgrade

Yea, it's the same on my AMD system with this Infinity. I like it, cept the part when you wanna go into the BIOS and miss it, lol

should auto-detect. go into the bios on the first restart and save the new cpu...then let windows do its thing when it starts.
