Also, you can buy ram in so called "dual packs" or whatever but its the same thing as single sticks and they usually charge more. If you want to have 1 gig you could just buy 2 more 256 sticks and put them in.
 
unless he has some crap MB that supports both DDR and SDRAM. (unlikely, but possible)
 
Yes, right now your ram is running in dual channel.

You can just buy 2 more 256 sticks and put them in the black slots.

I'm also assuming thats a p4c so you will need pc3200 ram, if the memory all has the same timings it should work together.
 
If your playing newer games, especially ones such as BF1942, you will notice some very nice performance gains. Also if you use photoshop alot or due some video editing it can be very nice to have that extra ram.
