So, one thing that I've noticed recently is that 6903's seem to be the common bechmark most of the time. Is this because they are redily available, or something else?

They used to be, and they were pretty damn good scoring
 
Under -bigadv they are stating to become rare as 8101 are now main stream.
 
It really depends on the system running the unit. However these new 8101 will definitely test your system, and your patience... It may become new benchmark unit just because of the huge break your overclock, rape your cooling, stress your power supply behavior we have been seeing.
