Hi, Im currently wondering what I should buy, if there is no drastic differance I really dont want to pay 400-420 for just a video card.

The most I want to spend is 280-320.

With the extra money I would most like buy a 3rd hd.

All I want to have the card do is play games at there highest setting. I will most likely buy d3 and hl2 but probably no other games for quite awhile after hl2 becuase all of the modding that can be done.

Thanks and how well out of curiosity does the 6800 compare with the 9800xt and x800pro in hl2 beta benchmarks.

Thanks

CottonFire.

I hope this is a major gain from my 5700ultra.

57 to 68nu is a jump its big but not that big.... 68nu is a tad bit faster than 9800xt's

the 6800 is faster then the 9800xt by quite a bit with no aa and af and about equal with aa and af on. The ati x800 pro is faster then the 6800 but its a hundred bucks more. The 6800 gt is the same price as the x800 pro (well maybe just a bit less then the x800 pro) but performs better then the x800 pro in almost all games.

This is how it goes:

6800nu:
> 128MB ram
> 12 pipes

6800GT:
> 256MB ram
> 16 pipes

More ram = better preformance at high resolutions (eg. 1600x +)
More pipes = better FPS in general, will come in to play more with future games (post-hl2 era?)

For an extra $100 the GT will play a lot of the upcoming games, where the 6800nu might start lagging (around 2005-2006?). But basically, for the games you want the 6800nu will do wonders.

ok thanks do you think it will be able to run the newest games for 3 years with ease?

would say a year and half maybe 2. 3 years will be stretching it. 6800gt yeah 3 years definitly. Or the 6800 nu w/ 256 vram (this isn't out yet though). Ram is going to be a big issue in a year or so.

I only play games in 1024/768 resolution so...

Ah, then the 6800 should be fine. The big performance hits start when enable higher AA/AF settings.

I get about 60 fps in the Doom3 timedemo with 4x AA @ 1024x768. Bumping up to 8/16 AA makes it drop down to 35/20 fps respectively. 4x AA is fine by me.

There is a pretty big difference between the 6800 and the GT when you get into high settings for AA/AF and at and beyond 1024x768. For the extra $100 you get 128 MB more (and better) RAM and 4 more pipelines then the 6800. If playing games at 16x1200 with full AA/AF is your goal, get the GT or Ultra. You can still play many games @ 1600x1200 with the 6800, but Doom 3 is not one of them.

If ~ $300 is your budget, get the 6800.

If ~ $400 is your budget, get the GT.

The GT will be worth the extra $ if you play at high resolutions and settings.

It seems that software is finally catching up to hardware somewhat so...I don't think cards are going to last as long as they have in the past. However if everyone does like id and makes their games scaleable then you might get 1.5-2 years out of a 6800nu. Keep in mind that it will be at least a year before we see games using the Doom 3/HL2 engines so a 6800nu should be fine with those games also.
