This has prolly been covered a miillion times before but I want some fresh opinions. I can either get a geforce 6800GT for $395 or an X800XT for $495. I know it's a $100 difference but im willing to spend that to get a better card that would also prevent me from having to reinstall windows (I like it how I have it) and I know that the XT is as fast or faster then the 6800 Ultra so it would naturally be faster then the GT. I just need some guidence here. I really like ATI's drivers but I LOVE Doom 3. I LOVE the smaller size of the ATI but i'd like to have nVidia in my main box again (no the nforce2 doesnt...well it does count, but you know what I mean). Can someone (as unbiased as me or biased ) point me in the right direction

well the gt can be easily over clocked to ultra that will give you virtually the same performance as the xt pe and ya spend a 100 bucks less.

As nV drivers become more mature, I'm guessing they will edge out the xt pe. as it is now they are trading shots with the ATi xt pe in Dx, and well ogl is all nV's. You might want to be patient and wait for the revision cards they are just around the corner.

You can't really go wrong with either of the cards you are choosing from, Just depends on if you want to spend an extra 100 bucks for a few FPS (if you aren't looking into overclocking)

just get the 6800gt man.. and overclock it to ultra speeds if ya want..... it wil perform amzingly in doom3 and if ya checked out the cs:s benchies ... nvidia is in the lead by a tiny margin ;) and o yeah like the guy said above nvidia+ogl=best. But the x800xt is also a nice choice... and overclocking it would be even nicer ;) but the gt is the best for 400 bucks and u probably wont notice a diff in perfomance in games anyways... just benchies scores thats all. i wouldve grabbed a gt.. but there wasnt any at compusa so i grabbed wat was left.. my PNY verto 6800ultra ;)

I wouldv'e gotten the ATI if I hadn't got a smokin' deal on my GT. The XT will always out pace the GT except in Doom. If you overclock the ATI has more potential. The ATI does not have thermal throttling issues when too cold like the Nvidia. Some guys are running super cooled XT's at close to 700 core, thats like insane fast.

There's a workaround to that problem with the GT's though!

The regular XT(not XT PE) is a good card for a little less than a full blowm XT-PE, 16 fill piplines.. prolly can hit XT_PE levels, and is more certainly faster than the GT likely even in doom3(based on the XT-PE being just as fast as the ultra with A.I enabled).
Had I not read a thread a few days ago, I also would ask if you watched alot of videos, but it seems now the 6800 series results in less cpu usage vs the X800

My machine\video card runs Doom 3 great, for that matter my other machines with 9800pro & 5900 run it great also.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I decided to get the reasonable one and get the 6800GT. Wont even OC it. Ordered it 10 minutes ago and am anticipating the card. I'm SO happy to go back to nVidia (not that ATI is bad in anyway shape or form). Only thing is I have to redo my ATI Radeon themed case, and remove my ATI tatoo(kidding :D )

You will enjoy it. I even heard FarCry 1.3 should be out soon according to the devs, which will use the 6800's exclusive OpenEXR HDR Lighting if all goes well.
