6800GT Flashing Issue

I bought a Zalman VF700-Cu for my PNY 6800GT after several failed attempts at making my own heatsink. I'm very much impressed with it, as the package got me to 431/1180 everyday stable over the stock 405/1140 stable. As it is, I only load at 60C, so I think I still have some more head room. I used the BIOS flashing guide (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=801537) to flash the core voltage to 1.4v, but now when I overclock I get a bad lock up, white dots cover the screen and the sound skips and repeats, freezing the game I'm playing and forcing me to manually reboot. THe load temps are only 63C with the extra juice, so did I flash wrong? I flashed back to the stock BIOS for the time being. Just looking for a little help/trouble shooting. I think I can make it to 450 core on this card :D
 
Does your BFG have 2 Molexes, and how are they connected to the PSU? I would use separate leads for each line leading to the video card - a volt modded and OC'd 6800GT will probably pull 7+ amps on +12, I would not want that coming down 1 wire. That's 84 watts - The 6 pin PCI Express power connector, by contrast, is designed for upward scalability to a 150 watt load, or 50 watts per pair. Also, is there anything like a hard drive, optical drive, or fans/lights on he leads feeding your video card?

I am not blaming your PSU - That Enermax unit with its dual +12 rails looks to be pretty solid. It just may not be able to send all that current down one wire.

Another possibility is that the power supply circuitry on your video card may not be up to the load or may be gettign too hot - have you investigated that?

Ok, it's a PNY with one power connector. That one power connector does have two fans on the end of it, so maybe that's the problem. When it hardlocks it looks like this:


I'll try switching the fans to another lead.
I arctic silvered the heatsink over the power mosfets, but I'll take a good look at that and its cooling capacity. Thanks for the ideas :cool:
 
some 6800gt's are.. gt's for a reason. seems like yours is just not playing nice with the extra voltage. it happens sometimes.

though as a side note, i'd advise you leave the voltage alone. my 6800gt used to be able to do ~405-410mhz with stock voltage.
i flashed to 1.4v.. got an extra 15mhz, but decided it wasn't worth it, so i flashed back down. now i'm stuck at 380mhz.
 
So I take it I'm extremely lucky that I got to 435/1170? Works for me then :D. The 1.4v can be applied, as auto detect goes from 439/1170 to 445/1190, but it just doesn't work. I'll try cleaning up the voltage line and see if that helps. If not, I won't complain about what I have :p
 
PNY is known for not using the highest quality power supply circuitry on their boards - I've heard of catastrophic capacitor blow ups and the like on PNY boards. I saw a 3 letter acronym and thought it was BFG. I wouldn't risk volt modding a PNY personally.
 
So the freeze more than likely could be the overload of the power regulators/capacitators/etc. It ususally freezes a few minutes into a game, so that would make sense. I'll leave itat 1.3v and be happy then, she flies as it is :cool:. The other thing is silence, maybe I'll work on turning all my fans down :D

Aren't they the same core as the ultra though? Or is it simply because the circuitry is crap on some, like DougLite mentioned. I can see the extra power connector being helpful in sending more power. Anyways, now the card is running off of its own cable from the PSU and the mosfets have a great arctic silver connection to their heatsink. I'm not going to try flashing it again though, if those little differences allow it to actually run on 1.4v, then it won't be very stable anyway. It would run stock, but overclocked it just freezes as shown. Ahh well, she's worth close to 6000 in 3DMark05, which I think is pretty damn good :cool:
