670 worth it?

I am feeling that itch to upgrade again.

My 6870 is paying the bills but I could use more horses for some games (BF3 in particular).

I use 3-4 monitors so I need a card that can handle them. Also I wanted to give nvidia a try this go round. This all led me to the 670.

My first question is whether or not the clock speed matters much (915-1006MHz).

My second involves the noise levels. I prefer quieter cards. Is the stock fan quiet on the 670 or should I go for one like this Gigabyte:

I have liked my MSI and Gigabyte cards I have had in the past and have heard good things about EVGA as well.

My current card is 11.42 inches long and the 670's are all 10 or 11 so I think I am fine there.

look at reviews and you will see many noise complaints about the reference 670 cooler so go non reference. the clocks are going to be all over the place depending on the game and will be much higher at times than the advertised clocks. it will never run at the base clock under load unless its not a very demanding app or you are having heat or power issues.
 
I had a 6970 for a while and was very happy with a 560ti after that. Once I made my switch to 670 though I am glad I stuck with team green. There are amazing reviews for the Asus DCII cooler in terms of both performance and low noise, and even though I am VERY happy with my MSI Twin Frozr IV I almost wish that I had gone with the Asus instead. Like cannondale06 said, stay away from reference coolers and go for it. You'll be glad you did.

As a side note, the ONLY thing I don't like about the Twin Frozr IV is the 'dust removal' tech, where the fans spin in reverse quickly on boot to dislodge dust from the cooler. If I didn't have filters on all my intakes I probably would like this.
 
OP the Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce is an excellent choice. you will able to keep temps around 60c even overclocked. one of the coolest running GTX 670 cards. and it should run fairly quiet.
 
it a better value than a GTX 680, if you can get one used of course even better and SLI later down the line for future proofing
 
Just put in an ASUS 670 non-top, impressed with the build quality and lack of noise so far.
 
Stock is fairly loud under bf3 and switcher 2 load. 670 is a great card otherwisr.

Good choice. Everything I've heard about the Gigabyte 670 has been pretty positive. Friend certainly likes his a lot.

You won't be disappointed.

For others like OP: GB Windforce, Asus DCUII and MSI Twin Frozr are the way to go for quiet effective coolers.
 
I have a Gigabyte 670 Windforce. I love the performance but love the low noise even more :)

asus is the quietest 670 you can buy; gigabyte is the best all around in term of temp. noise, performance.
 
you won't be dissapointed with Gigabyte winforce 670. I have one and able to reach 1300 mhz stable on core.
 
I got the EVGA FTW, first one started to artifact and crash after a week of use. The second one works great and is crushing games on my Korean Crossover monitor at 1440p
 
I know the OP already ordered the 670 but what about the 660 and the amd 8xxx?
aren't those supposed to be out in less then 2 weeks?

rumors are saying about mid August for the 660 but no one knows the exact date or even what its specs actually are. and I am not sure why you think any 8 series AMD cards will be out soon as that will likely be several months away at the earliest.
 
Finally got to testing BF3 and wow am I impressed!
I went from high with 0 AA to max everything.

With current hot deals on HD7950 for around $300 in general I don't think the GTX 670 is worth it.

-GTX 670 generally costs more than HD 7950.
-HD7950 has stronger compute performance.
-HD7950 has 33% larger memory interface.
-HD7950 has 50% more video ram.


For the above reasons the HD7950 is a stronger card but due to certain game driver preferences, get the card that works best with the games that you plan on playing.

No sense in getting the more powerful HD7950 if the drivers don't work as well as the weaker GTX 670 drivers.


That Gigabyte windforce GTX 670 is very nice.
 
8xxx series from AMD already? I thought 7xxx series launched not too long age? Am I missing something here?
 
I have an Asus DCU2 TOP GTX 670 and I think it is Fing awesome. It's nearly silent and idles at less than 50C. The cooling is amazing and you should watch the video on newegg of the Asus rep breaking down all the features.

I've never used this card in anything higher than 1080p but it performs almost exactly as well as my old 7970 does.

Just wish I bought the 4 gig version.

I live in the same world as you.

Look at the hardware and it is very easy to see that what I have posted is true. The AMD HD7950 is superior for the reasons that I listed. The only real difference is the drivers. If you happen to have a game that runs better with the GTX 670 then it makes sense to get a GTX 670.


I know that you had a HD7950 that wasn't a good over clocker. My experience is with a HD7950 that is a great over clocker. I think that you would have a different tune if you had the same quality of GPU on your HD7950.

I do agree with the price point difference. I have a gtx 670 and I love it, but I dont believe its one hundred dollars better than the 7950. I prefer nVidia drivers to ATI but if I was buying a card right now it would most likely be the 7950. I am very happy with my gtx 670's performance but its hard to justify a $100 dollar premium from a 7950 to a gtx 670. I guess at this point I would wait and see what the gtx 660 will do and for what price.
 
It all depends! AMD cards are good for running multi monitors with just one card.... and nvidia are better but mostlikely youll be running 2 cards.... Dont get me wrong AMD's are good but nvidia are just better! just my 2cent

So i think ill go with 670 and after that save more money for another 670
 
How do the two cards stack up against each other when overclocking? Or is the whole comparison including overclocking to the max already?
