Which intel processors are 64bit right now?

And if i get 64 bit CPU today...can i use it as 32bit until later i switch to 64 bit when all the programs are avaliable?
 
any proccesor marked with EMT64 is 64bit......and yes it will work with 32 bit programs
 
Hummm...i can't find any cpu's that say EMT64...
I think i have to go with AMD Athlon 64 on this one...


If i want to build a pc to be 64bit ready...only the cpy must be 64 bit right?
 
All the Pentium Ds are EM64T.
All the Pentium 600 series as well
Any of the Pentium 500 series that end in '1' (ie 571, 541, ...).
All of the Nocona core Xeons and later.
 
Unless you only upgrade CPUs once every three or four years, or you have a very pressing need for 64 bit right now (which the vast majority of people don't, especially considering the huge driver headaches XP64 offers up) then don't chase 64 bit as a must have feature.

32 bit CPUs perform just as well as 64 bit in 99% of the situations desktop users will encounter. It's one thing if you are planning on running a massive server and need 8 gigs of RAM, or you are using one of the rare scientific or heavily math intensive apps that actually benefit from 64 bit right now, but most people aren't.

That being said, now is not the best time to jump on any of the currently availible Intel 64 bit procs, or an Athlon64 or X2 for that matter. Intel's most attractive offering at the moment is the Core Duo, but limited desktop mobo support hurts it a bit. At the same time, both the A64s and the Core Duo are already under the looming shadow of Conroe, which will handily outperform both, will be availible in a couple months, and is 64 bit.
