Anyone have any stats of their computer decibel level?>

I need to find an SPL meter than can measure from 10-60 deciebls

LOL the speakers are off.

Send it back? its like 2 years old but has always been this loud. I got a two year warranty though so perhaps it is still good. What are they going to do?? The crappy plastic case probaly doesn't help much.

My Dell Dimension 8100 is mouse fart quiet (except for the lone case fan). Something's up with yours.

Hmm, my roommate uses a Dimension 8200 (P4 1.8, blah blah who cares about that), and while it is slightly louder than mine (since I installed quieter hard drives), it's by no means anywhere near 60 decibels.

My suggestion is to buy a new 80 mm fan and replace the one inside the case. Of course, if the noise is coming from the PSU, then that's a problem.

Try cleaning the dust out of the system, cleaning out the fans, then replace the case fan if need be.

The Dell shouldn't sound like you have a Vantec Tornado inside it.

COuld I replace the PSU fan? if so, which fan would I want to use?

THe 80mm fan is definately causing the problem though.

How far from the system did you take that reading? At least 3 feet away is the standard. My Tornados at full blast probably arn't that loud and I have heard dying fans before. If it's really that loud, something is seriously fucked up or that fan is getting ready to die like no other.

Haha, I guess this is my "Barton" post :)

Have you found a BIOS that unlocks the multipliers? I'm desperately seeking one. Oh BTW its probably that huge fan blowing on the CPU, its the only one in the case :)

No bios will do that for a dell. Dell is all intel!!!!

How could it be 62db?? i've got a dell 400sc server that came with a 3.2 P4. I cannot even hear the thing!!!

If it wasnt for the light on the front i coulnt even tell it was on

I believe you can replace the PSU itself in that machine. All new Dells (past the PIII as far as I know) use standard ATX PSUs.

Or, put some soundproofing in the case. ;) Don't put it inside the case, but take the plastic part off and put it between the metal and plastic. Or do what I did with the 4100 and just remove the Plastic all together. ;)

All new dell's use a "Dell" PSU with a few pins switched. It'll fry if you try a Dell PSU with a standard mobo or vice-versa. Anyway, yes you can replace te fan quite easily, but I guarantee you'll have no warranty left. If it's under warranty, send it back, or ask them if you can send back just the PSU. Otherwise, if you're out of a warranty, this fan should do. It's the quietest 80mm fan you can buy, period. and it's not dirt slow either, it has almost as many RPMs/CFMs as a Panalflo L1A. If you like cheaper and you don't want the price of those (you can't find 'em cheaper, I've tried) get a Panaflo fan, any of them are pretty quiet and super-reliable. The most reliable you can buy, actually. You can get 'em at newegg.

The reading was taken 1 foot away. At 3 ft it is 50 dbs

I'll look into the new fans. Im pretty sure the PSU is somewhatquiet.

hahah that dude bought a dell hahahahah

oh, and you cant unlock the multiplier because

a) there are no overclocking features or options in Dell BIOSes whatsoever, and;

b) they are all intel i.e. locked multiplier

 thats even louder than my smartfan2!!!!

since when did dell put deltas in their cases:p its not like they having anything that NEEDS cooling

I'm with everyone else, try cleaning out the case to rid of dust and look aroudn the case to see if anything "shaking" or vibrating that may be creating the excessive noise. I just had a relative who bought a cheap Dell, about $1100 Cdn. When he first got it, it was noisy so he sent it back in for a quieter one. If your Dell warranty still works, try that. They might or might not depending on your luck. Most brandname computers are whisper quiet, CPU and everything runs pretty hot but relatively stable.
