Im thinking about upgrading to a 5970

I currently own a gtx280OC I game at 16x10

Is it worth paying those 600 given my current situation?

thanks!

I think it's only worth it if you jump right to 5970 CF.

not even. your fine for a couple of years with that monitor.

Ignore this troll.

I've just checked Tomshardware for benchmarks of the 5970 vs older cards and it beats the GTX285 by twice as much (or more), and the GTX280 is slightly faster than your GTX280. So we're talking easily twice as fast, and if you overvolt and overclock the 5970 you'd probably closer to 3x faster. That's a decent upgrade in my opinion.

The problem is your monitor isn't a very high resolution and so would not be a good use for a card that powerful, you'd be getting frame rates 2-3x higher but I bet you're already getting a good frame rate in pretty much all your games still, so unless you really need ultra high frame rates I wouldn't bother. If you're going to move to a 1920x1200/1080, 2560x1600 or an eyefinity setup anytime soon then it would be a great card.

It is not worth the upgrade unless you get a monitor with higher resolution.

until you make the move to 1920x1080 or higher its not worth it. your gtx 280 will last for at least another year at 1680x1050.

thanks

I will be going with the majority , Ill keep the 280gtx

My plan will be to save and get a full system upgrade by JAN 2011 (since Im pretty happy with my current quadcore setup)

Because apparently trolling isn't against the rules, but insulting a troll is.

5970 is definitely a huge upgrade from GTX 280.

but the problem is, where to find one?

I still can't find one anywhere, else I already have one in my rig

thinking if I should go for 5870 instead...

If your financial situation is such that you have to ask about it and can't move to a bigger monitor, the best upgrade for you is a second gtx 280.

dude why dont you tell him to get a monitor first he already has a gtx 280, which is still way too good for that resolution, his best investment would be to keep this card and get a new monitor instead, it is stupid to tell him to by another gtx 280, do you honestly think he needs a second one for his resolution? common now!

buy a monitor first than think about an upgrade, you need atleast 24 inch monitor but I still think that 5970 is just wasting your money even for a 24inch, I have a 5850 though I overclocked the hell out of it to 1000mhz core and 1250 memory, it ends being faster than hd 5870 and it plays everything I have at 1920x1200, and crysis plays at very high settings at around 38fps ave. pretty smooth. for six hundered I would advice you to get a monitor and than get a hd 5870 if you really wanna upgrade, 24 inch monitors are dirt cheap right now,

lol thats why I said get a hd 5870 or even a 5850, true it is pointless to get a 5970 unless you got a 30 inch monitor, or you play crysis at very high, well even my 5850 does that fine at 1920x1200

i think you need to shut up.. but obviously many people have told you that and you still dont.. so i guess im just speaking to deaf ears on this one...

like a few others have said.. at 16x1050 theres absolutely no reason to go to the 5970.. at the most you will need is a 5870.. but a 5850 should do just fine but on that same note.. the 5850 will give you about the same performance as the card you currently have.. since there arent many DX11 games out right now that brings it to the question.. is dx11 really worth the upgrade at this time..

Would you guys lighten the hell up. PS3 was obviously making a joke.

ps3's cried wolf to many times.. and we all have had enough of it..

It depends on what games he plays. If he's thinking about upgrading then he's obviously losing a few frames here or there. A single gtx280 isn't enough to keep all games above 60fps minimum at 4xAA on a 1680x1050 monitor.

it isn't? even crysis runs pretty damn good on that screen. I like high end hardware as much as the next [H]er but this is kinda far out there. if it wasn't for the damn monitor bug I would be having a hell of a time justifying my upgrading my card. and I'm at 2.3mp.

Just depends on your definition of pretty good. I mean, I don't care about useless frames, like getting Left 4 Dead from 400fps to 500fps, but I do care about going from 45 to 60. At 1920x1200 and 1920x1080, there was a very pleasant real world gain for me moving from one gtx 280 to two of them. New games that would come out without sli profiles were constant reminders of the benefit that second card added once the profiles got updated. 1680x1050 isn't that different from 1920x1080. For someone who likes to put vsynch on and never see the framerate go below 60 that second card is a lot of help.

really? man are you serious, I am not gonna start an argument here, are you really saying anything to justify that he will benefit from a second gtx 280, I still say waste of money.

1680*1050 is a good resolution.!!!
when you have three of them , it is a perfect mix on speed, and amount of pixel
5040*1050 it rock (ofcause 5970 rocks too)

This was the first review I found with 1680 resolution. Sorry bro, 26 fps on very high crysis doesn't cut it. Averages only 49 fps on maxed world in conflict. A second card will help a lot in stressful games and they aren't expensive right now.

lol, you picked a review from a year and a half ago, I told you I don't wanna argue with you, because you would go and do about anything to prove your point, is this really all about crysis, I mean if you cant play crysis at very high than your life is over, if that is the case why don't you tell him to get a 5970 like he originally wanted if it just boils down to cysis at very high. I play crysis at very high at 39 fps at 1920x1200 with my oc'ed 5850 and let me tell you it is pretty damn smooth.

I don't think it's obvious at all. Plenty of people get the "upgrade itch" even though they don't need it. Or maybe frames isn't is problem and just wants DX11 or EyeFinity. Point being, there are many reasons one may be considering an upgrade.

I agree with what many of the others have said. At that resolution, the 280 is more than capable.

Lol i thought this thread died when I wrote that I had a decision made ...

If you see that link then you would understand why Im not interested in a bigger monitor...

Personally I like to obliterate the games I play FPS-wise so for me 200fps vs 300fps there is a difference

With my current setup (280gtx OC + 3.2ghzC2Q) I was never able to run crysis at an acceptable fps , at the end I upped the graphic details BUT lowered the resoultion to 720p and then it became pretty playable until the jungle level where u get attacked by the aliens and you have to main a jeep turret

At the time I got those 24" displays I went specifically for 16x10 because on all benchmarks I found on the web games running at that resolution never dipped below 60fps, contrary on what happens with 1080p resolutions and beyond
