5970 Microstuttering

Getting a 5970 for 300$, should I worry about microstuttering? And relatively I should be getting 20%+ performance over the GTX 580, right??

I hear microstuttering is a problem (from tomshardware) with even today's 698X cards in crossfire, so a 5970 which is really 2 5870's downclocked, should I worry??
 
Depends on the game and on the framerate and your personal perception. I would not get a 5970 - to little VRAM for the horsepower. Either wait for the next generation which is almost around the corner or get a single GPU card now.
 
Yea even though its advertised as 5970 2GB only 1GB of VRam is used, because it is 2 1GB chips on one card. Microstutter shouldn't be an issue but VRam limitation would.

5970 for $300? Sounds like a ripoff? Ordered a 2 gb 6950 from newegg a few days ago for $230.
 
Whoever coined the term microstuttering sucks. Why not sli-stuttering or something.

You cannot get microstuttering with 1 card.

5970 is a dual GPU card..

On topic, I would get a 6950 or 6970 over 5970 any day, you can add a GPU later and the 6000 are supposed to scale much better than the 5000 series when your x-fire.
 
i too, had a 5970 and no matter how high my FPS were, it just did not feel smooth. i waited and waited for magical drivers and hotfixes to come out and decided to go green instead. sorry :(
 
There's no microsuttering in games with the one I'm using. Other people's eyes could be more sensitive to it though.
They weren't great last year when the ATI department was making the drivers. AMD drivers have been much better.

Performance wise, it rapes 1920x1200 like a mad man.
 
That's a hell of a deal for $300. I thought a 4870x2 @ $100 was boiling hot.
 
I really can't pass out on that deal I guess, I know I'll regret not going for it if I did just go with a 6950, guess ill go with the 5970 =)

But I'm really looking for the opinions of 5970 owner's, do you guys notice micro-stuttering in a lot of games?

i did. for example, dirt 2 @ 60fps just didn't feel smooth.

Are you using the latest drivers? The micro-stuttering problem really worries me but I can't pass out on a deal like that. Here is my dilemma I'm looking to upgrade from GTX 260 Core 216's in SLI so if I go with a single GPU like the 6950, the performance would actually go DOWN.

i sold my 5970 a while ago (when the cat 10.3's were out) so I wouldn't be able to answer your question. i hear the 6xxx series scale much better so you may have better luck. if you want more info on the 5970 though, try PM'ing princessfrosty. she seems to have had it for a while.

I've only been playing BF3 and BC2 and both are smooth.
I haven't tried other games yet, but the drivers are much better than last year.

I overclocked the card to 925/1200, and it gets about 80-105fps in BF3(Ultra/PostAA) and 150-160fps in BC2(maxed) @ 1920x1200.

Sweet thanks a lot, your FPS are high but do you ever notice micro-stuttering?
 
6950crossfire at 5040x1050 here. I've only had micro stutter in two games? The only reason I was getting stutter was because I only had access to a 1200x1000 monitor for the day. RadeonPro/Force Single GPU fixed its over rendering. The other micro stutter I had was in Oblivion. To fix that, I just forced very high details/AA and the stutter stopped.

Sweet thanks man, I want to be able to play Skyrim maxed @ 1920x1200 with a 2600K @ 5GHz and a 5970 both watercooled so the GPU would be overclocked too, I shouldn't see any micro-stuttering then if I do what you did, right?

Skyrim is a DX9 port so it will run super smooth on the PC(dependent upon driver support and bugs).
But if you're that concerned about sutter, you should get a single GPU. The 5970 will be more than enough for any game on the market now.
BF3 is a memory hog which limits the 5970 AA abilities.

It very hard to say no or yes because eveyones sensitivity to fps is different.
Microstutter hasn't severely affected dual gpu video cards since the 4000 series days or before.
