5970 display port problem.

Got my 5970 in today. I have it hooked up to my 3 asus vw266h's.

The problem is no matter what montior I hook to my active display port adapter to I can only get it to show video @ 1440x900 alone or 2400x600 in a group with the other monitors. When I set the res higher everything will work fine for a few seconds then the display port screen will start to blink and finally go blank.

I did a fresh wipe and reinstall because when i first installed the card windows was locking up and giving me red and green verticle lines. I have tried asus drivers and ati's 10.4s

Any ideas? I am really starting to regret this, should have just built 2 -bigadv folding rigs. specs in sig.

yes. It shows all all 3 monitors and shows the 1x3 span. If i unplug teh display prt and plug it back in i can even game in eyefinity for 30 seconds or so before the screen goes blank

I have seen in numerous places that this model adapter can be made more reliable by:
1. Plugging it into a dedicated USB AC adapter, such as:
http://www.amazon.com/USB-AC-MP3-Players-White/dp/B000A2BLEC/
2. Making sure it doesn't get too hot, possibly even supplying active cooling. If this is actually a factor, it wouldn't surprise me if opening it up would help. But I've yet to try it, and I haven't noticed mine getting particularly hot.

I have the same adapter(from Dell), and use it between a laptop docking station and an LP3065 at 2560x1600. Switching to a dedicated AC adapter made it a lot more stable, though I still occasionally notice a bit of flickering for around 5-10 minutes when I first power the laptop up. It's annoying, but better than working at 1280x800...

Thanks for the Input! That's actually what i was going to try but walmart didnt have one and was the only place open at midnight lol. I will give that a shot after work and report back.

I think I'll send it back to dell before i resort to cracking it open though lol. Mine is really cold to the touch like it isnt even trying to do anything.
 
I've seen lots of people say they couldn't get above a certain resolution, had flickering, or couldn't get it work at all, and had no problems after exchanging the adapter for another. Apparently those adapters are very hit or miss. I'd try swapping it for another.
 
I though I saw lots of Eyefinity users at Rage3D complain the displayport monitor going black and not going on again while this didn't happen in 10.3s.
 
Try:

1. Make sure your graphics card is not OC'd. OC'ing caused mine to act in a similar manner... make sure to disable any graphics card auto-OC too.
2. Then maybe try for a graphics card BIOS update which may allow for more voltage to the display outputs. Read somewhere that a new BIOS update helped certain blanking issues.
3. Reinstall driver(s) after using Driver Cleaner. This worked for me after trying the latest 10.3 betas after using the first beta and then upgrading to the second beta set.
4. Dunno...

Thanks for all the help guys. I have tried just about everything other than sending the adapter back for another. Have never returned anything to dell, hopefully it's pretty painless.

It might also be faulty mini dp output on the 5970. I was getting random black screens and since switching to 5870 Eyefinity 6 cards I haven't had any with same active adapter.

Well that's def not what i wanted to hear lol. I can rma the card back to newegg but I'm sure they'll give me a refund since they wont have it in stock :(

I will try having dell send me a new adapter and hope for the best, if that doesn't work I guess my next stop is the egg. :(

Check and see if it has the approved firmware on it.
 
Lol I'm such a nerd. I just got all excited Kyle posted in my thread :D

Firmware on the display port adapter? Hmmm hadn't thought of that. I will search around tonight for some info on that.

Any one have any links to the firmware or guides for updating?

I did check with asus to make sure I had the most recent bios for my 5970.

It doesn't look like there is anyway to update the firmware that I can find. Will have to send it back and hope i get one with 2.0 next time :(.

I read that a bios flash of the 5870 can also help the problem but that doesnt help us 5970 owners much.

Edit: Not sure if it's because I ordered on a business account but dell was very quick to apologize profusely and send out a new one NBD. Hopefully that solves the issue :)

I nabbed my adapter (same as yours) from Amazon in March, and it appeared to have the updated firmware on it. I had some very occasional blinking, but that was resolved by a BIOS flash on the card. If you get the new one and have similar issues, I would definitely try flashing the card since it's a quick and easy possible fix.
 
My card shipped with the most recent asus bios. Is there a dif amd/ati bios i should be using? Was able to find one for a 5870 but not the 5970.

How were you able to check your adapters firmware version? I am just going off a small sticker that says F/W:034. I assume that means firmware but who knows?

on a side note I called dell at 8:30 PM last night about the problem. New display port adapter showed up today at 2:30!

Currently there is still no way released to update the BIOS on the adapters by the end user TMK.
 
It was a bad active display port adapter. The replacement works great.
