5850 Benchmarks

So this discussion had come up in another thread that I just saw was closed, but since I went through the trouble to make these runs I thought I ought to post them. These are 30 second FRAPS benchmarks playing various "Rush" levels of BFBC2 with my rig (see signature):

Settings: 2560x1600, 4xAA, 16xAF, everything on High, HBAO on

Basically, I'd spawn in battle, hit the benchmark key, and do my thing. Right now I'm playing as a medic working on my platinum star for the MG3, so there's some healing, some cover fire, some reviving, a little of everything going on :cool:. For those interested, my soldier is Dr. K6.

These runs were done to show a couple of things and correct some misinformation that I've seen posted on this forum over the last week. First, a 5850 handles almost every game cranked at 2560x1600, even DX11 games. The only game I've had trouble with at maximum settings is Metro 2033 (big surprise, I know). Secondly, in reference to a lot of the GTX 460 vs. 5850 threads, the GTX 460 =/= 5850, these are two very different cards despite how much people like to compare them. In my opinion, this is how I consider them: for 1680x1050 and 1920x1080, the GTX 460 is the card to get. It's a great mid-range card that has a lot of headroom with overclocking and puts out high FPS numbers. However, when you move to high resolution with lots of eye candy, the 5850 is an absolute beast, as I've shown here. It might not put out the highest FPS numbers at lower resolutions (100 FPS+, etc.), but it can take a hell of a workload before it gets dragged down into the unplayable arena. That's why I recommend the 5850 for high resolution and eye candy.

That's it because that's all the data I have. I'm more than happy to bench other titles/games/try different settings for those parties interested. There's been too much fanboy bullshit spread on this forum and so I'm cutting through it with some actual testing and results. If anyone else would like to participate, I think it would be awesome.

At 1680x1050 the 5850 is already 14% faster than the 768MB version of the GTX 460 and 6% faster than the 1GB version. At 1920x1200 (not exactly 1080p but close), the 5850 is 25% faster than a 768MB GTX 460 and 15% faster than a 1GB GTX 460. And a HD 5850 crushes the GTX 460 at 2560x1600, by 37% (768MB) and 23% (1GB).

I run 5850 Eyefinity right now. I was thinking about upgrading my mobo and PSU to SLI GTX 460s to preserve my 3x1 monitor capability, but when I crunched the numbers, I discovered this: the cheapest 1 GB GTX 460 goes for $230. The cheapest HD 5850 goes for only $20 more. (See Hot Deals for the $250 XFX sale.) So I decided to wait and see what the HD 68xx series has to offer, instead. The 1 GB GTX 460 is ~15% slower than the 5850 at 1080p resolutions and yet only 8% cheaper... I'm sorry but that doesn't sound like a good deal to me.

Exactly what I'm doing. There's been nothing released since the 5850 that has interested me and I'm hoping AMD's 6000 series delivers. I had 5850 CF for awhile just to play around with it and I'm still not a fan of multi-GPU. I'm hoping these new chips offer a lot of the same as far as value, lower power consumption, low noise, and overclockability while taking performance much further.
 
I was keeping an eye on the other thread that was closed to see would you come back and post the FRAPS results. It got closed before you could post though, so thanks for coming back and posting them on this thread.
 
What are you guys using Eyefinity for now? Simply multitasking? Gaming while web browsing, watching a movie, etc?

I'm just curious how you guys are typically using this setup, as in all honesty, it seems a bit far fetched, even though I am envious, hah.
