5830's available @ the egg!

from what ive seen id rather buy a 4890 and OC the living hell out of it.... ATI really crapped on this one... i mean cmon its 10% slower than the previous gen and it has more Shader cores with everything else identical to the 4890 and its still slower...

I hear ya, see my sig. But good luck finding one since they are considered EOL. I was lucky enough to get one of the last cool double red fan asus 4890 editions(it doesnt have a proper edition name)

I'm a bit disappointed too after reading all the reviews. It's a a dozen or so frames faster than a 5770 in certain tests and a few frames slower than the 5850 in other tests. Then, in a few games, it's 10 to 25 frames slower than the 5850. At higher resolution, the 16 ROPs begin to show its limitation.

I'll probably end up Crossfiring two 5770s in the end, or continue to wait for the 5850s to drop lower in price sometime in the next three to four months.

the only thing i dont understand is why its slower than its predecessor but on paper it has better specs and a better 40nm architecture... idk what ATI did but they totally crapped on this one...

This card seriously needs to be at least $30/40 cheaper. It's way too expensive for what it is.

seeing as the range for the 5770 is $150-170 then I would say the 5830 pricing should be $199-$209.

Agreed. I think it should also be renamed the 5790.

Would make a nice 5790 if it had 5770 clocks and half the memory bus width. Since previews mentioned the 5830 being possible on 5770 PCBs, I don't see that as too terrible of a proposition.

Sounds like they set it up to perform on the same level as a GTX260 or GTX275. Not a bad target, but it needs to come down in price a little.

Slightly off topic: What ever happened to that xDNA thing Diamond was supposed to have on their cards that would allow Crossfire on any chipset (including Nvidia chipsets)? Did that get dropped, or is it now just assumed that it's included?

why? it seems closer to the 5850 than the 5770.

Really? Are you talking about price or performance?

[H]'s review makes it look like performance is closer to 5850 by showing lowered resolution on the 5770 just to "keep up" but doing so gives it better FPS than the 5830 at the higher res. If you check majority of the other review sites, only like 30% of the time is the 5830 even near the middle between 5850 and 5770 performance wise. Majority of the time it's a 70/30 or 80/20 split with it being much closer to 5770 than 5850.

I've been asking for the apples to apples which [H] normally does but for some reason chose to leave out of their 5830 review (probably because they felt there was no direct competing card as GT200 and 4xxx are all technically EOL'd.

Yea, wouldn't even consider this card unless it gets to ~$180 range. Crossfiring 2 5770s seems to be a better solution at this point.

I meant performance wise. But I have not read through all the reviews yet. This comparison chart lays things out nicely,
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...39-sapphire-radeon-hd-5830-1gb-review-22.html

That chart is interesting indeed since it shows it's closer to 5850 with AA on and closer to 5770 with AA off in L4D. Interesting thing I did not catch from the other reviews. However the AA on and off does not seem to be a consistent result in other games (e.g. Dirt 2). The HWC reviewer also noted it was basically only L4D and Dragon Age. Even in that long lineup of games I would say you find the 5830 closer to 5770 more often than the 5850.

Edit:
Read the last paragraph on their conclusion page.

In the end, it all comes down to performance and even though the HD 5830 shows flashes of brilliance which totally justify its price there are many other situations where disappointment reigns. The simple fact of the matter is that the framerates jump around too erratically from game to game to justify this card's price. Let’s be straightforward here: the price of the HD 5830 is right in the middle of the HD 5770 and HD 5850 but its performance is more often than not much closer to the lower-end card. This is unfortunate but once pricing stabilizes a few weeks after launch, we may be looking at a whole new ballgame.

While I agree with everyone here who voices disappointment I think we can all see why they priced it at $239. It has no competition. It is the mid point [price-wise] between the 5770 and 5850. If they priced the 5830 at $200 5770 sales would slump. As always they are charging as much as people will pay for it. Or better yet it will get some people to even consider finding the extra $50-60 for the 5850

As soon as these things hit around $209 or lower I'll definitely be selling off my two 5750s and grabbing two of the 5830s.

Doesn't sound like much of an upgrade at all to me. You should really spring for two 5850s or hell a single 5870.

$209 x2 = $418. By the time the 5830 gets down to $209 I'm sure the 5870 will be under $400 again.
