56k connecting at horrible speed out of nowhere

Hello,

This is about something that i noticed once, and something that happened to my friend.

I use DSL. But when i visit my parents on breaks and holidays, i take my laptop and use dial up. when i connect at my parents house it connects at 26.4 kbps. Sometime ago, i took a trip to another city. At the hotel i connected my laptop to dial up there. It connected at 49.5 kbp. My question is.. why? at my parents house it always connects at 26.4. but at hee hotel, much faster.

Here is something that happened to my friend.

He use to connect at 52.2kbps, out of nowhere now, for the last few months (about 2 or 3) he only connects at like 28.6 kbp. Why did this happen out of nowhere? is this a software thing that can be corrected, or does it have to do with the phone lines?

probably just the quality of the phone lines at the hotel versus where your parents are and where your buddy lives
