560 Ti 2win issues

Hello,

My dad just recently purchased a 560 2win from evga. The comp starts up but no video shows and the fans on the gpu run. We bought the card to run on his old system and figured there would be some compatibility issues. Which issue do you think is causing the card not to run?

PSU is 520HX from corsair. I know the card probably needs more power but the reviews I read said it used about 330W plus whatever the rest of the comp uses (my dad's comp is not overclocked or anything so I figured it would be an extra 100-200W at most) and thought we'd be ok.

Mobo is a g33m DSR2 micro atx mobo. The PCI slot is 1.0 x16. I thought most 2.0 x16 cards were backwards compatible with 1.0 x16 slots.

Based what the comp is doing (i.e. is able to post and run but no video) what do you think the issue is? I'm hoping its a psu issue because if we were to update the mobo it would be a newer socket and thus require a new cpu and ram. Also, I think I read somewhere that the 2.0 x16 slots on the mobo provide more power directly to the card as well. I'm thinking it's probably a mobo issue... Thanks,

I don't have experience with that card but you might be using the wrong port. I may be wrong but isn't there a primary dvi port? I believe it would be the top port. But if you are using something else then this wont help. Then again the card could just be bad. Although it wouldn't hurt to try using a different connector.
 
Forgot to mention that I would recommend getting a bigger PSU even if you get video because it would need 375w since you are using 75w from the Pcie slot and 150w each from the psu. Also the PSU needs 50a amps on 12v rail.

Didn't even notice it had 3 DVI ports so my last post is useless.
 
May want to get a bigger PSU, and possibly update the mobo bios to the latest version.
 
Ah. I forgot about amperage requirements. Just checked the 520HX. It only provides 18Amps on a 12v rail so that could definitely be the problem.

I'll definitely get a new PSU, but do you guys think the PCI 16x 1.0 slot for the card will cause problems? I heard pci 1.0 x16 slots provide like 75watts whereas pci 2.0 x16 slots provide double at 150W. Is this correct? Even so if it's still in a pci 1.0x16 slot will it just draw extra power through the rails? Thanks again,

Power consumption on that card is damn near the same as a single GTX580 at idle and 25% over a GTX580 under load. That mainboard plus whatever CPU you currently have installed probably draws more juice than you think it does as well. I would say your PSU is not up to spec for that configuration regardless of whether the card will work in that slot.

It appears you're correct about power draw capability on a PCI-E 1.0 vs 2.0 slot as well, at least when the manufacturer makes the slot "fully implemented"... Whatever that entails.

Regardless I know I need to update the psu. I'm just trying to prevent this from turning into a full upgrade but sadly it looks like it might be going that route.

do you have all the external power connectors connected (if even via molex adapters) i would think that even though your power supply more than likely is not powerful enough to run that card it should still beable to post and get into windows, i would just fully expect crashes if you tried to run anything that will use both GPU's

also i bet you don't even have enough connectors on your current power supply for that card because it should need 2x 8 pin PCI-E power connectors on it (normal 560's have 2x 6 pin's )

they measured 487w under full stress on their test system and recommend at least a 700w PSU for most systems full of devices and i would say that sounds about right. i run my 2x 560 Ti's + cpu/mobo on a 650 watt PSU but its dedicated to them only, i have a second 550w PSU that runs everything else (fans, drives etc.)

Honestly, I have no idea on that count. In theory it should... Unfortunately, it could be an expensive lesson to find out that it doesn't work. Do you have another PSU around that you can test with in conjuction with the one powering the system? I've tested configurations before using more than one PSU to drive "sections" of a machine that would never work on any of the single PSUs that I had available to me.

yeah i have run rigged dual PSU setups in the past as well, my current case/psu is legit dual though ;)
 
Ok just checked the 520hx again. It has three 12V rails rated at 18A each. Apparently if there's more than one you just add them together so that equals 54A which should satisfy power requirements.

With regards to the 8 pin connectors. There are two 8 pin connectors on the 520HX... I'm really thinking it should at least power on and work properly and maybe fail or act up under load or something.
 
This is a cool idea. I actually have another 520hx in my old desktop. When I visit my pops for xmas I'll see if I can use it to power the GPU alone.

Sort of paranoid about destroying something though... What sucks is that on top of all of this work it could just possibly be a DOA card too.
 
you can give it a try but i do not think its a good idea to run anything on the motherboard off a separate power supply, if you do do it you need to make sure that the slave power supply is wired into the master so that it powers up at the same time. if you have to manually start the slave before the master it could result in bad things if your giving the gpu juice while the mobo does not have juice or vice versa. a safer way to run duals is to run anything not connected to the motherboard via power connections on the main and everything else on the slave to free up some power on the main psu.

all this being said your hx520 should be able to power up the system and post at least.

you know what i just checked the info out on that motherboard, it has an onboard intel video card, did you go into the bios and disable/switch video priority to external PCI-E etc, i bet you anything that is the problem if you did not.
 
Ok I just saw a review that mentioned that some motherboards don't show video if you have the dvi cable in the primary port. It was hardwarecanucks review and don't have the link as im on my phone. Hope that helps.
 
Frito: If I do use the extra psu I'll be careful. Frito. I did not manually switch the video priority but I'm pretty sure it switches automatically. Or at least it did with the 8800GT my dad used originally. But, I'll check it out anyway.

i do not think its a good idea to run anything on the motherboard off a separate power supply

The way I've always done this is to have the "main" PSU (ie: the one wired to the power switch on the chassis) dedicated solely to powering the mobo and system drive and another powering up everything else. I've done with this multi-GPU configurations (dual 8800GTX's) and big groups of hard-drives by powering up the "secondary" PSU first and then the main immediately following. Never had any trouble with this to date.

I've used the "hotwire" method with a nice thick gauge wire running from power-good to ground (green to black) and also used the PSU hook-up PCB you see attached the lower right corner of this thing

Im almost 100% positive, that to run any of the "2WIN" cards, you have to have an SLI MOBO. And also I think your PSU may be a little limited in terms of amperage. I know my 460 requires 24 Amps, a 560 would be closer to 30, and a 2WIN car is probably closer to 60 Amps.
 
I have proved myself wrong, looks like EVGA has said that the 2WIN cards are compatible on non-SLI mobos, and it says minimum power requirements are a 700w PSU and 50A on the +12v rail.

yeah they have a NF200 chip on the card to solve SLI compatibility issues with non SLI motherboards.
 
Hmm.. Strange. I feel like this set up should work given the info I've learned over the past few days.

I'm beginning the think the problem is the PCI 1.0 x16 slot. I'll try messing around with it some more before buying a new mobo though. Thanks for all the help,
