530J overclocking help

I just swapped out my trusty 520 for a 530J and am a bit disappointed with the results so far. The 520 ran at 250 fsb (3.5) solid and 260 fsb (3.64) stable under load for several hours before a reboot, both at stock voltage, but this 530J will only boot at 230 fsb (3.46) at stock voltage. Am I doing something wrong here?

I even raised the voltage to 1.425 and now I can boot at 250 fsb (3.75), but I don't even get into windows. Did I get a bunk chip? I've seen these 530J chips clocked at >4Ghz using stock cooling so I'm thinking something is wrong. I'm tempted to think I need a new power supply (mine's only 300W), but this chip (J revision) is supposed to be more energy efficient than my old D0 chip so I'm assuming power isn't the problem.

Help!
 
Yeah, a 300 watt + stock voltage = vcore droop under load that's going to kill stablity. That voltage isn't very high. You can raise it more, as long as your temps are OK.
 
I'm going to replace the psu for sure. I'm just waiting for the lower wattage versions of the new seasonic s12 units to show up on newegg. Even a 380W replacement psu should do the trick.

I don't think this is the problem though. Can anyone guess what would be keeping me back here? Should I return this chip?

Roight. After putting the system at full load for a few hours the voltage on my 12V line droops down from 12.06 to 11.84. Is this my problem?

You have a nice computer with some expensive components. If you are concerned about overclocking, why would you skimp on the powersupply? I had a 400 watt fortron that wouldn't power my last northwood, let alone my latest prescott. Get at least a decent 500 watt power supply, otherwise, you'll wonder if that 380 is limiting your overclocks.

500W? Why the hell would I need that much power? I've got a low power graphics card, low power ddr2, and a lower power J revision prescott chip. 80 more watts might do me good, but I think another 200 would just be a waste of money. I'd rather get a more efficient psu with stable line voltages with a lower wattage rating than a piece of junk 500W or 600W psu.
 
If you really want your Pressi to run solid, you need a Solid PSU, with good 12v+ rails.

Anyone that overclocks a Pressi can tell you that it requries lots of power.

If you get a good PSU (most Pressi OC'ers use OCZ PowerStream), it will increase your stability and help your OC.

Go for the highest wattage possible in computer power supplies. They are switching, so they are only using the power that your computer draws. Don't be afraid to get a bigger PSU than you think you need, because more is way better than less!

I'm thinking a seasonic s12 380W/430W when they hit the market, because seasonic is well known for the high efficiency / silence of their power supplies. I've switched to AMD though since it'll probably cut my electric bills in half without costing me an arm and a leg like a Dothan desktop setup would. The link below is to a 6XX review at anand that shows the 570J taking a full 104W more at load than the 660! Even at idle the difference is 30W and I don't think they even have cool'n'quiet enabled for this test!

Can't wait till AMD's Turion shows up. New AMD mobile chip + DDR2 = cheap, exceedingly low power consumption build that can own the pentium m.
