So with Doom3 out and talk of needing 512meg on the Video card's to play ultra high quality mode smooth, when do you think the 512meg ver. of the 6800's and x800's will come out ?

Or will the 512meg card's only show up in the PCI-e variety..? I hope not, can't the AGP Bus put 512meg to good use in a game like Doom3...?

Don't know if they will be pci-e only but they should be out next revision. The bus really doesn't have anything to do with the need for additional vram, since things stored in vram will no pass through the bus at run time. Only during load time are game assests sent through the bus. If there isn't enough vram then they will pass through the bus during run time though (called texture flipping, this is not good)

well if you have a good enough compuoter you could run ultra high smooth just fine.

like an Athlon 64 FX53 and 2GB of Corsair XMS or some good Mushkin ram or so and a 256 mb 6800 Ultra or X800xt-pe it should run perfect.. mabye not at 1600x1200 but a slightly lower res mabye

With as expensive as memory is I doubt we will see 512mb cards, maybe better loss-less compression techniques ala nvidia's HCT.

But then again I never expected a $500 gfx price point. =)
