Hi guys. I've been looking to build a good priced gaming PC, and happened across this forum, which, as far as I've seen, is has some very knowledgeable and helpful people. I couldn't resist!

I've been running on a very old Emachines Using an AMD Athlon 63 3000+ 2.0Ghz with 1 GB RAM and a Radeon X700 for years, and while it plays every game I've ever come across on at least low settings, loading times have been a pain, and I'd like to experience modern graphics again. (;

I've browsed a PC or two on this forum to fit my needs, but I haven't really seen what I wanted, so here's my request. Thanks in advance!

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Lots of gaming; Dragon Age, Garrys Mod, Borderlands, etc.
Photoshop and web browsing, viewing of HD video.
Lots of experimentation with gaming engines and 3D modeling programs.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
~$500; Tax+shipping included, can go up to $600 if necessary.
3) Where do you live?
Florida
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
CPU, RAM, case, power supply, motherboard
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
300 Gb Western Digital Caviar hard drive.
6) Will you be overclocking?
No
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
I currently own a 17" Optiquest Q7. It performs unexpectedly well and I don't plan on replacing it, but maybe one day.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
As soon as I can.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Nothing special; odds are I'll only be running one card and one hard drive.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
No, but nothing to worry about. I'll use Windows' $30 student deal.

Again, thank you all, I only wish I could return the favor.

Let's go $600 man. This would be a nice balanced build that should pretty much play most games at 1280x1024 res on your 17" monitor

The new Seagate HDD that HG recommended performs better than the last-gen Western Digital Raptors (and is only 10% slower than the current-gen VelociRaptors).

He must be referring to a 320GB WD Caviar Drive. There's no 300GB WD Caviar HDD. That would be funny he has a 300GB VelociRaptor drive in that Emachine computer. I bet he has the WD3200AAJS or JB 320GB drive in that machine

RAR if you indeed do reuse your hard drive can throw that 50 bucks into a better processor or case or just save it.

WD 500 GB has falling from favor due too Samsung and Seagate having better performing HDD at the same price point.

This build doesn't need a 650 watt psu. 400watt Corsair would be more than enough for these parts.

I don't have much time for a good reply at the moment, but sweeeet.

I'm a big fan of that case and processor. I believe I will go with HardwareGuru's build; I like the motherboard... I've never encountered a double profile card before! Would there be an easily noticeable difference in speed between the Radeon HD 5750 and the 5770?

I'm planning on ordering later this afternoon.

Done and done. I think I'll stick around the forum, I'll let'cha know how it turns out.
Thanks!!

assumed a possible future proofing in my choice of vid card and power supply. possible higher resolution monitor and maybe new vidcard someday. If can be had under budget why not /shrug.

I really appreciate the foresight dajet, makes sense - but no worries; with my track record, it will be a very, very long time until I upgrade again. (;

dajet24 build is actually pretty good. He actually beat my build in price/performance. But, looking at OP computer specs, I could tell he is not someone that upgrades a computer often. An Athlon 64 3000+ cpu is very old. That's over 5+ years old already. I doubt he will take advantage of a 650W psu.

I would stick with the Radeon HD 5750 video card as this card has good performance and falls between a Radeon HD 4850/Radeon HD 4870 video card. This is alot of power for just 1280x1024 resolution. It's going to be light years ahead of his Radeon X700 video card. I would save the $25. If he had a 20" monitor with 1600x1200 res or 1680x1050 res, then the Radeon HD 5770 or Radeon 4870 1GB would be more ideal. I would also save $25 on the PSU also by going with the Corsair VX450 which has 32A on the +12V rail. This power supply although only 450watts is quite capable to run a 4890 or 5850 video card. Especially considering the fact that OP is not O/C the cpu. Finally, stick with the Seagate 500GB Sata Drive for $54.99. This would make it a total of $545.00. Shipping would be like $7 on the mobo. Cut $50 off.

I agree with HG. Build for what you need, upgrade when you need more performance. GPUs are the fastest depreciating component in a gaming system, so buy enough for current needs. When those needs change, upgrade. PSUs don't change much over the years, but they do get less efficient/effective over time, so again, no need for overkill (650W would be overkill, imo).

Alright guys. I understand this isn't very relevant anymore, but I told you I'd tell you how it went, but I gave you my word I'd let you know how it turned out.
Two years and some change later and this rig's still going strong! Haven't hit a program it's had trouble with yet!

This is what I ended up getting:

For a second I was concerned that you got some really bad advice.

Glad it's still chugging along.

Thats good to know. Lets see some pics of that bad boy. (clean it out first...lol)

Nice! I always build with older/budget gear and it saves me tons of money. The rig in my sig is brand new. Never really had a problem running any game either. What can I say, I'm cheap lol.
