I have a problem since I got my new computer. Every time I play music or anything that is usually 2 channel, it will not come out of all my speakers. On my old computer no matter what, everything would come out in surround sound. Now only surround sound sources such as games use all my speakers, and even then some don't work in 5.1 like CS 1.6 or BF2. I am wondering whether there is any way I can get it to come out of all my speakers. I set it in the control panel to 5.1 and when I hit the test button it comes out all my speakers. I have an ASUS P5K-E WIFI/AP. Sorry if I have been asking a lot of questions lately.

Does whatever music player your using let you choose where it's output goes? That may need adjusted. It may not be on the standard outs, I know if mine is set to SPDIF, I get no sound from my speakers.

media player should use the settings you have in windows. Make sure Vista knows you have a 5.1 audio system either by using the Sound setup in the Control Panel or by using the vendor specific configuration utility.

Do you have just the one soundcard?
ie do you have a soundcard and motherboard sound enabled?
If so, plug your speakers into the other soundcard and see if the other sounds come from there.

makeing a few assumptions here.. i know you have vista, assumeing your useing realtech audio... make sure you have the lastest driver

go into control panel and select the speakers and hit configure run throught the wizard... now back at the sound CP make sure the speakers are still selected and hit properties, go to the enhancements tab and check speaker fill (immediat mode if you have it as well) then go to advanced and uncheck allow applications to take exclusive control. ok/apply, ok/apply, enjoy

I'm not sure what the actual onboard sound brand is but I use Sound Max HD drivers (from Analog Devices?). They are the newest from the ASUS website. The drivers/software I'm using I guess change the enhancement tab. It's called system effects? Anyway, there is nothing like what you're mentioning there. Here's a screen:

hmm... yeah.. vista took away the option for you, they did the same for the realtecs at first as well, untill realtec decided to release a new driver that fixed it,

if the sonic processing check box dosent fix it, then your SOL untill they release a driver that dose. try checking it, and try listening to your music with winamp, (winamps directx output codecs will always try to play to as many speakers as possible), it may fix the music, but as for your games, again you may have to wait for a new driver.

/edit i just noticed you have a 'custom' tab where i do not, what is under that tab?

There is a single checkbox that is currently not checked that says "Swap center/subwoofer controls"

On your old machine, you must have been set up to upmix two channel sources. What you need is an upmixer -- WMP probably has something like this built right in (I wouldn't really know).

I don't condone upmixing anyway. It inevitably leads phase coherence issues.

Welcome to Vista. Normally, BF2 runs an OpenAL-based audio engine that supports multichannel surround in Vista, but it may be using a DS3D fallback in this case, or the generic OpenAL ICD may not be able to provide surround support. DS3D-based games that look for a hardware mixing path lose surround support in Vista. You might try running the OpenAL installer, but creating a System Restore point before doing so is a fine idea. I actually have no idea what it'll do for you in Vista (if anything).

The original HL engine uses DS3D exclusively. The only way to get surround in CS would be to get an Audigy 2 or an X-Fi and use ALchemy to wrap DS3D calls to OpenAL.
