Does anyone know where I can download a utility to rip mp3's in the new 5.1 surround standard?
 
unless it's already pre-recorded in 5.1, ripping it into 5.1 would be sort of a null point. that is, ya can't take stereo 2-channel and magically make it 5.1. if so however, somebody plz link me :)
 
Standard audio cds are stereo. You won't gain anything from 5.1 mp3s.
 
I'm not even sure what would be so good about surround-sound music. If the tracks get too scattered, I dunno, I think it would become less enjoyable. There's a difference between 'surround-sound' and 'full, rich sound.'

Whereas if you have gunshots behind you and a car roaring in front of you, now that's exciting.
 
surround sound music is supposed to give you the sense that you're in the middle of the audio. it would sort of be like being in the middle of the concert. imagine hear the vocalist through the center speaker, the bass player on the right, the drum player ... etc...
if you have a 5.1 speaker setup try listening to a DTS or DVD-Audio disc.

anyway, trying google'ing for multichannel mp3s but like it was mentioned earlier converting stereo to multichannel gives you !@#$%^&.
 
How many concerts have you gone to that have each musician in a different location in the room? Even with a symphony, everyone is in front of you. Left and right volume and clarity are the only variables.

I'll tell you how to "get into the middle of music." Set up two different speaker systems, queue the same song, and start playing them a split second apart. Then stand between the sources.

Actually the point of Multichannel Audio formats like DVD-A and SACD is to still have all the performers imaged in front of you, not to be on stage in the middle of them, and also have the concert hall acoustics reproduced by the rear channels.

Currently there are only a few multichannel audio systems out there worth considering, most of which are tens of thousands of dollars when properly set up. MP3 in multichannel would be pointless. MP3 quality is already so bad in stereo that downsampling(which is what MP3 is all about) multichannel music to a few MB would sound horrendous.
 
The Blue Man Group 5.1 DVD-A/DTS mix of "The Complex" is downright amazing. So much more detail in the sound that gets lost in the stereo mix. Would be nice if all music could sound as good, but like has been previously stated, mp3's would probably sound like ass. I usually set my system to replicate the front left and right channels to the rear left and right for mp3 work.

I have that dvd too.. -- It's awesome. I've seen them in concert like 3 times, too.

Tracy Bonham looks good for her age, as well.
