Well I think I can say my 4870X2 has had it, running CoD 4 (on 10.9 hotfix drivers) and at 80% fan speed the card has gotten up to 110*c before I've closed it, not keen to see how hot it can get, on top of that the vent out the back of the computer seems to be exhausting very little heat, i've cleaned the card as best I can with proper compressed air etc
Here's my question, I'm running at 1920x1200 with a decently clocked i5, I'm not really keen on another dual GPU card, would it be unwise to purchase a 5870 with the "possible" release of the 6XXX series of the 5870 possibly only 2 months away? (I know they perform similar when scaling is good) but I need something asap since I can't game and I'm looking for something simple - 1 gpu, something powerful and something that doesn't stutter or force me to disable cat AI! >_>

go for the 5870. the 6XXX series will cost more than an equally powerful 5XXX series card since its newer tech, and although the price of the 5XXX's will drop when the 6XXX's come out, it will be like $10 or $20, which is worth losing out on in order to have a working computer for the next 2 months.

Yeah I think that's the best thing to do, I took off the cleaner and completely cleaned it and reapplied thermal paste but it's still hitting 105*C under load at max speed, probably damaged from the heat so i'll pick up a 5870 tomorrow
for future reference, does putting another one of these on a motherboard that doesn't have 2 x16 lanes make a HUGE difference?

No it would not make a huge difference.

If you are not in a rush, the 6 series amd card are coming out within the next few weeks.

I thought it was just the lower end cards coming out in a few weeks, assuming they're to get something out to combat the GTX 460 asap
I'm after the 5870 equivalent (No idea what that would be called with their naming scheme atm)

Midrange, enthusiast and high end cards will be out before the end of the year. Mainstream and entry level cards early next year. The 5870 replacement (family hierarchy wise) will be out in November.

Guh, now I'm not sure what to do at all, I need a card but spending $400 for the same performance hurts when there could be a card that performs 20% faster a month later.

The 4870x2 has a heatsink design that is a real pain in the ass to properly clean. There are two separate, independent heatsinks (one for each GPU) that the air must pass through before it exits the videocard. Dust will sometimes build up in the space between the heatsinks inside the card which is very difficult to remove with compressed air, or anything short of removing the fan shroud.

But beyond that, the cards are designed to hit 100% fan at or before 104C, so if your card is hitting 110C and you're limiting it to 80% fan, that's at least partially on you.

I have two of them with only a single-slot of space in-between and piss-poor airflow all around and It's still rare that I'll see temps above the low 90's. On the other hand I run both at 100% fan almost all of the time.

Meanwhile, you could disable Catalyst AI to run only one of the GPUs and see if the temperatures get within acceptable ranges.

Disabling cat AI and running the fan at 100% it still hit 108*C after about 5 minutes, it then started to stutter and slow down

Well, looks like that's done for then. Suppose you could go for an aftermarket cooling solution, which should work fine unless the card is actually damaged.
