Just got a free 4870 x2 and installed it. Whenever I am in a game, it is showing 100% usage on 1 core and 0% on the other. I cannot figure out if it is just a glitch and it is using both cores or if it isn't using them both. I almost doubled my framerate in BF3 over my 4870, so that leads me to believe that it is just not showing it correctly.

CCC and GPU-Z both report the 2nd core as not being in use, what do you guys think?
 
been doing a little more testing in windowed mode with forcing 3d clocks:
2d mode in BF3 - 20 FPS
forcing 3d clocks - 29 FPS
Fullscreen - 52-54 FPS

This leads me to believe that it does actually use both cores when fullscreen, it just reports 0% usage on the 2nd core.
 
Have you installed the latest drivers for the card and caps?is crossfire enabled?

I believe that dual GPU cards still use crossfire even though they are on the same card and as far as I can remember full screen should use both GPU's if they are enabled,but windowed will not.

try a monitoring program that will log the activity,like msi afterburner

That kinda sucks, and makes me glad i didnt go crossfire. For some odd reason i tend to run alot of my games windowed, so i can quickly switch to another app for a sec.
 
Any way to force crossfire when windowed? I don't like running in full screen.

No.

Performance is often lower while playing in a window even when you're not running crossfire. I'm surprised to see so many people who run in a window anyway.

Also, Alt-Tab still works fine when you are running in full-screen. I can alt-tab out of a game, switch a song in foobar or w/e, and tab back in in less than 2 seconds.

Have you considered running the 4870x2 along with your previous 4870 for Triple-Crossfire?

Would that work? I thought that if you ran a 4870 X2 crossfired with a 4870, it would turn the x2 into a single card.

Crossfire is very versatile in that regard. To the system, the 4870x2 is little more than 2 4870 cards, so adding a 3rd works as intended.

Where it would have to compromise would be if you added in a 512mb 4870, in which case all 3 would function as if they had 512mb. If you crossfired the 4870x2 with a 4850, all 3 GPUs would run basically at the speed of a 4850, etc. But with 3 4870 1GB GPUs, there is no compromise.
 
sweet, I will have to find a crossfire bridge, my 4870 is a 1gb, so it would work out perfectly. Thanks bud.
 
Will a bridge from a 3870 series card work? I couldn't find my 4870 box.
 
FYI, with the latest drivers, you cannot crossfire a 4850 with a 4870x2.

That would be very odd if true. 4870x2 + 4870 is still listed even as a recommended config on their website (4870x2 + 4850 is not):

But it still might be the case. If you are going to try an older driver, I'd start with 10.2, as those are the oldest drivers available that are still usable with the latest CAPs.

Download MSI Afterburner and use it to monitor GPU usage, core speed, temps, etc.
 
4870x2 + 4870 1GB Trifire works just fine in the latest drivers as I was just using it a few months ago.

My crossfire setup did the same thing in bf3 if I didn't run my monitors native resolution or if ran in windows mode one gpu would park
