I've installed the AMD GPU Clock Tool and it does a fine job of adjusting my GPU speed beyond 790MHz. I've also used the trick to increase the fan speed bymodifying the CCC profiles. What I can't do is both at the same time. It seems like if I overclocking with the GPU clock tool I can't also increase the fan speed. I seemed to have got it to work once but can't repeat it. Is there any way I can overclock beyond 790 AND adjust the fan speed?

Where's my Riva Tuner support?!

I can't go passed 790 without crashing anyway. I guess I would need a BIOS mod or hard voltage mod. Ahh well, GTX 260 will be here tomorrow. I heard they OC very well.

not to derail the thread, but would you mind posting impressions/comparisons? i'm considering one of these cards for my next purchase.

The 48-- series overclocks very well. It is just more involved at the moment because of the lack of Rivatuner, etc -- at the moment. But, I guess its want want want, now now now.

Yeah...I'll mention something about it. I don't have AoC, Vantage or COD4. I see a lot people like seeing those benchmarks. The only game I have that anyone is interested in
is Crysis, so I'll post something about that comparison.

Oddly, i've been playing Solar Empire for about week now. I bet you could run that game with an MX 440. You certainly don't need an HD 4870 to run it, anyway. :p

Oh and I just finished Mass Effect...it ran flawless at 1680 x 1050 everything maxed out with 4X AA. Good game, too. Almost good enough to make me want to buy a console system again...

That may be true for others...i've seen 840, 850 mhz on the core for 4870s. I tried with 100 percent fan speed and modded BIOS...mine won't do over 790 without crashing.
I might have better luck with Rivatuner, though.

From what i have read, the different AIB partners set their voltages slightly different, so that is going to affect overclocking too, some are lower and others are slightly higher...

I think that the drivers are very immature with the card running at high shader speed, I was doing 840/1100 for few days with the fan bios mod and so the card does not overheat, I got artifacts through ati tool at those speeds but in games I never got any glitches or artifacts of any sort, but now the card does not wan to go anything above 790/1100, it is totally stable at those speeds but anything higher seems to give me problems. tried lowering the mem clock but did not help, this is one thing I hate about ati because they seem to either lock their bios so AIB partners are the only ones able to clock the boards higher than what we can until people buy those overclocked boards, and ofcourse we get to have those bioses later. well gtx seems to have come down in price greatly to 449 already on newegg.com, and if it comes down to 425-399 or so I might just add another hundred and get the gtx, I always wanted to buy the gtx but I would never pay more than 400 for a card, The gtx's seem to run close to 675 mhz with average overclocks.

I had the same problem until the one time I got the fan fix to keep the fan at 50% and it took 845 MHz with no problems. I wish I could duplicate the fan control + gpu clock tool. I think this card has huge OC potential with proper fan control.

My GTX 280 doesn't overclock for crap btw.

I'm running watercooled 4870s and tried 850/1150 and crashed out of windows. Any way to find out what the voltage is set to on particular cards?

Better how... what resolution/game/settings/price? The 280 is generally more powerful as a single-card solution, but 4870 is more cost effective.

rbe at techpowerup

at least you see your settings in the bios.
Use gpu-z to save bios.
and then use rbe to check.

I am at 850/1050 stable as far, run, vantage and 3dmark06 and played CoH without an issue.

and how high can gtx280 go ?

865/1100 stable so far with HR-03GT cooler seeing max temp of 64C with 1,600 rpm fan. I can control the fan speed through uGuru so I plan on getting a faster kama flex fan. I still have not pushed the card to the point it fails. I cant wait for Riva Tuner or ATI tool to support these.

Well, here's my GTX 260 vs HD 4870 review as promised from a few posts up:

The GTX 260 absolutely smokes, figuratively and literally.

1680 x 1050 Crysis DX 9 HIGH Island GPU no AA Vista 32-bit:

HD 4870- 41.23 FPS avg.

GTX 260- 46.14 FPS avg.

GTX 260 @ 660 core / 1400 mhz shaders- 49.18 FPS avg.

The HD 4870 will pull about 46 FPS avg. on my system in XP with a slight OC, so I can only imagine the gains the GTX 260 would have. And yes, you can argue it until you're red in the face- XP is still faster than Vista for gaming. 32-bit, anyway.

The only problem with this otherwise excellent card, is it overheats. I must have gotten one of the bad ones. Furmark almost killed it in less than 20 seconds. (It came back to life after a ten-minute system shutdown.) Crysis will peak @ 105c in about five minutes before artifacts, then shutdown.

It's a shame, this card would have been a keeper for me. I read on another forum that a guy tamed his GTX 280's heat by adding a Danger Den block and underclocking his card.
Others have RMA'd theirs only to get the same issues with the replacement. So this one's going back to ZZF.

The HD 4870 is still a pretty tight card and hasn't given me a lick of trouble.

I've gotten the 260 to 675/1300 but no more than that because of heat. The problem is definitely the card heating up. I noticed that once it got to about 53/54 it would start to artifact with ATI Tool. If there was a good(any?) aftermarket hsf I bet it would go higher.

OCing is nice..but the one I have overheats at stock speeds, also.

This youtube video is exactly what I have experienced with mine. I have a huge Lian-Li case with good airflow and it's right next to an AC duct. (though I haven't tried to pump cold AC air inside the case ;) )

I know some people are posting similar heat problems, others are saying their card is fine. These cards rock pretty damn hard... I wonder if the people who are saying they have no problem with theirs are just sitting on them until aftermarket heatsinks come out...stretching the truth a bit for "forum cred". I guess i'm wondering if there really are bad samples of these cards...or is it all of them? I might try one RMA if it was possible to get a better sample.

You read some of the forums and NewEgg reviews...and some people are saying their GTX's never break 70c under full load? hmm....

Well at 675/1275 with 100% fan it gets to 63C after 30 minutes full load. So I guess if you don't mind a vacuum cleaner for a computer...

**
After 30 minutes same clocks with fan on "Auto" it got to and stayed at 80C.

Hi there

guys,

well in crysis at 1680x1050 AA 2x medium

4870 gets 48 FPS
260 gets 47 FPS

card running idle 49c and load 70c

running stock right now, but as soon as I get rivatuner to work with the card and some games that actually are really challenging and that I want to play, will overclock it ;)

looks like a keeper to me :D and in other games rivals the 280 to boot,

sam
