4870 GPU clock jumps down

I Just installed 2 4870's in crossfire. The problem is when I go to the ATI control panel and look at current GPU settings the GPU clock jumps from 770MHZ to 500MHZ. It also does this when just one 4870 is installed. Anyone have any idea why the GPU clock would do that? It does this no matter what ATI overdrive is set at. When I change the memory clock those settings seem to stick but the GPU never budges. It just stays at a constant 500MHz.

Any help yould be great.
 
yeah, I jumped the gun on that one. It runs at the right speed when I'm in a game. I installed those GRF Chillas on both cards and man are those silent. My 3D mark numbers arn't much better than my 9800 GTX and 3Dmark06 crashes everytime.
 
You need to install a patch for 3DMark which fixes the crashing.
If you have performance issues, try a fresh install of Windows on a spare drive to see if its fixable.

Test your before and after game benchmarks. I'm running 4850CF on an old 975x chipset mboard and I'm getting huge frame rate increases in all my games running in PCIE 1.1 at 8x on both slots. Every game shows at least 25% with most above 50% and a few are twice as fast almost.

What are your temps? My cards idle at around 50c so far. I installed GFX chillas on both and love them. This is my first experience with crossfire and so far its looking good.
 
Using the manual fanspeed mod and bumping up the speed to 35% from the stock 23%, my temps are around 50C idle. The stock cooler is actually very good, but it can get noisy if you crank up the speed too much
 
yea, they do seem well built but I need to find ways to cut noise down where I can. My machine is already a bit on the loud side. My 9800 GTX was much louded than my new crossfire setup.
 
Here you go Coolink Gfxchilla 4 Heatpipe VGA Cooler . I wanted to keep my noise levels down and they fit the bill. Both my cards idle at high 40's to 50c. I know you can do that with the "fan mod" but you also increase the noise level a bit. These GFXchillas are virtually silent.
