I just bought the asus 4850 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121272) which is suppposed to be factory overclocked 680/2100 and I am don't think my card is doing that. I wonder if that is why my 3dmark06 score seems to be so low - 10400 ( I have win xp so can't use the newer one). one of the major reasons I chose this card was because it was overclocked.

I am using official drivers - 8.11 rather than the asus drivers that came with the card.

In CCC, there are 4 numbers and only one of the 4 match.
the top part says GPU clock - 680 and memory clock 1050
on the bottom it says current value is GPU clock 500 and memory clock 750.

My cpu is core 2 duo 6550 and I have 2 gig of ram

Do I have a bad card that wasn't made properly. When I installed the asus drivers that came with the card, no game was playable. I had to do a system restore before installing to get it working again in games.
 
First of all, you do not need Asus driver, use catalyst 9.1 instead. No it wont affect your factory OC, factory OC is set inside video card bios, not driver. you are much better off with ATi official drivers.

What speed do you have your E6550 running at? E6550 at stock speed seems a little too weak to push enough frames out of the 4850.
 
You need to be actually running some 3D app in order to see the card running at the 3D settings in CCC. ATITool includes the capability of rendering a cube in 3D within a small window. I find it useful for kicking my card into 3D mode without having to run a fullscreen app.
 
3Dmark05 and 06 are half CPU benchmarks. Completely worthless for measuring GPU performance anymore unless you are comparing the same system.
 
I downloaded gpu-z and that too had 2 different numbers neither of which is what the card is suppoed to be.

under the first tab - graphics card it says 680 and 1050
under the second tab sensors it says 500 and 750 with temp of 47( the frst temp listed). the temp matches CCC

I thought ATI tools was just for overclocking. Does CCC have to be uninstalled then if you install that?

My CPU is not overclocked. I don't know how and I am not about to trash it without having someone by my side who knows what they are doing. that is why I wanted a video card that already came overclocked. When I asked about card suggestions I was told my cpu was fine for the card.

so why are there 2 different sets of numbers and why doesnt the card list numbers that it was claimed to be.
 
Um, all of you guys are missing something.

The 4850 down clocks itself to conserve power and heat emissions during periods of non-use.
Try running something like Atitool or Furmark and check the clocks during periods of activity.
 
I am not tech savy so can I please have a simple answer -is my card defective since it shows 2 differnt sets of speed(680/1050 and 500/750) and neither match what Asus claims the card shoud be of 680/2100.

How can I check during periods of activity. if i am playing a game i am not at the desktop to look at CCC and alt-tabbing never works as either it can't be done or it locks up the pc.
 
GDDR3 is double-pumped. Multiply your memory speed by 2 and you get 2100. Core speed is 680.

Download and run Atitool Beta 4 if you're on vista. Run the 3d cube app, and open CCC. It should be sitting at 680/1050.

It is NOT defective.
 
The 500/750 settings you're seeing are probably the 2D mode clocks.
Turn on Furmark or some other GPU Stress Test and they will jump to their normal speeds.

Anyhow it's perfectly normal...
 
Should the "enable ATI overdrive " be checked. This is the one that is at 680/1050.


i downlaoded ati tool beta 4( i have win xp) . there is no 3d cube app just something called show 3d app. Is that the same thing? while it is spinning which is just a short time current values does go to 680/1050 but when it stops spinning it goes back 500/750.

I also ran the scan artifacts for 5 minutes. Here the bottom number - the current values does go to 680/1050. the temp also rises to the 70's. the fan goes from 50% to 70%.

I also tried the Furmark v1.6. Neither the benchmark test or stability test would start. I get a message that says your version of catalyst drivers slows down the GPU. Rename furmark.exe to f.exe to crack catalyst protection. The link in the error message mention drivers 8.8 - http://www.geeks3d.com/?p=1106 that ATI Optimizes Catalyst 8.8 to be FurMark-Proof! Yet on the test results page I see other people using driver newer than 8.8.

even when renaming furmark. exe to f.exe this same message comes up and the 2 tests don't work.
 
you can enable ati overdrive and adjust fan speed.It will also allow you too overclock the gpu,I do not know how far this can be pushed since it is overclocked already.500/750 are normal speeds.Once a 3D app. is started the gpu will jump to factory overclock speeds.Your card is normal.

Uhhhh.....

DDR = double data rate.
Therefore, 1050 x 2 = 2100 MHz effective speed.

Your card is exactly what Asus said it would be.

680/1050 (x2 = 2100) is the 3D speed
500/750 (x2 = 1500) is the 2D/idle speed.
 
Yep I have the same card, the 2D idle state clocks are 500/750 like yours show.

Do your self a favor and download and use ATI tray tool(ATT), also change the fan to 100% all times. Mine was quiet at this speed. It still would idle just about 50C with 100% fan and would still get around 70C under load.

I used ATT to lower my idle clocks and voltage to save 15w at idle says my kill a watt meter. Lowering the memory clocks is where most of the power savings comes from, mine will only go to 600mhz memory or I get artifacts on the desktop.

Since the cooler in not great on that card and its missing the vrm heatsinks, I got an accelero S1 rev 2 cooler and its fabulous. Running passive with no case fans running its cooler than the stock 100% fan and all my case fans running(idle and load).

DrDoU, As I have no desire to further overclcok the card, I think I will then not check off "enable ati overdrive"

SpeedEuphoria, what version of ati tools are you using. I downlaoded the ATitools beta 4 version ( I have win XP) and there is no fan control on there that I could see. I do not want to touch any clock settings as I have no idea of what i am doing and don't want to mess up the card.

whenver I have exited from a game such as crysis, I have checked the temp as soon as I could and it has never gone above 70. I don't know a thing about installing fans, just keep it simple to installing the very basics( hard drive, memory, cd drive, video card)
 
For ATT you right click, then go up to "hardware", then go up to "overclocking settings", then there is two tabs, the 2nd one says "fan" and you can change the fan speed there.

There is no place to right click. I tried right clicking on just the exe and also when the program is up. Thats why i wanted to know what version you were running. I was told to download the latest beta version plus I read elsewehre that the last non beta doesn't work with the 4850 cards.
 
Zanthia is referring to Atitool, which is an older program used mainly for artifact testing. Other than that it's useless for the HD4850.

Others in the thread are referring to a program called Ati Tray Tools, which is useful as a replacement for CCC. It includes features such as GPU/MEM under/overclocking, adjustint voltages and fan speeds, DirectX/OpenGL settings, and GPU monitoring.

Zanthia your card is normal and you can quit messing around with it. :) You can get rid of Atitool and Furmark. But I'd recommend keeping Gpu-Z as a lightweight and easy way of monitoring your card's temperatures and fan speed. Just use the information in the "Sensors" tab to keep track of your card during idle or while gaming....
