480 SLI issue

So, I've been running 480 sli for some time now. Starting a couple months back every time I boot up the main monitor would become pixelated, as if the card was hot, or overclocked too heavily and would then reset the screen, giving a Nvidia driver blah blah blah has stopped responding. This happens regardless of the driver being used and gpu temps are within the norm for 480 sli. There is also no issues playing games, any thoughts or similar experiences?
 
It might be downclocking too far at idle for your dual monitors. try to force constant 2D perf or 3d perf clocks. I do believe they're in the 400mhz range for 2d Perf, and only 51mhz for 2d idle. My comp gets abit dicey at idle clocks too with dual monitors.
 
My idle clocks are set somewhere around there in afterburner, I'll try fiddling with that.

He is more than fine with his power supply. 1000 watts would be enough for 3 480's. Have you looked at the power usage by cards in real situations? 1000w is a marketing gimmick for most of us. I have been running 2 oc 570s with my 750w PCP&C for 18 months with no issues.

As long as you have a quality PSU with good amperage you are fine.
 
I had the same issue of driver resetting on boot...worked in games. Not the same symptoms of the artifacts.

I very much enjoyed my time with GTX 480 SLI. But they are power-draining, flame-throwing beasts. And unless you have water and at least a decent 1000w power supply, I am of the opinion that GTX 480 SLI will cause some issues somewhere along the line.

Every time I see those 480 specials in Hot Deals, I pine for them...but I know I have to spend more money to keep them running happy.
