with 128kb l2 cach. how hot does one of these things run, what pin count is it, and would a fan/waterblock fin on the socket clips?

what pin count is it
its a socket 370..........pretty standard from the old celeron 300, p3 coppermine, thu the tuatulin p3's. Heat shouldnt be an issue, except it looks like u'r gonna o/c it.

I got a 433mhz Celeron my neighbor was throwing in the trash a couple of months ago.
After viewing the pron on it and marveling at all the virus's I formatted it and installed Win/2kPro. It has 256mb of crucial ram and runs just fine. Unfortunately it it's an old HP Pavillillion with no oc capabilities but the wife uses it for surfing and whatever and it works good. I put an old pci slot fan in it as it had no case fans, just the ps exhaust fan and cpu fan. It folded for 1 month with no issues, heat or otherwise.
It's the HP Pavillion model#4483 with the 433 celery plus a monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. Networked to the 3 other boxes it surfs at the same speeds, 400kbs downloads. It's amazing what people throw away. I would jack the cpu but the whole box is working as good or better than new.
The worst thing about is is the 128mb cache.

actualy im looking for a hot proc :p. im doing this for a sience fair experiment. should i go with this to jack up the heat?(http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=0). i have an apon mobo, and i was wondering if this(http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/koo-09.html) will fit on it

your newegg link didnt work, so im not sure what your idea is to "heat things up" is. The reason i said heat wouldnt be an issue was simply because its only a 400mhz....no big "problem" heat-ups, but even a pentium2 will refuse to run without a fan on the heatsink. if you want more heat, simple - overclock it. As for the waterblock ........ it'll fit supposedly. All socket 370 boards have the same clip retainers on the side of the socket.

I have a PII in one of my pc's that can run passively

heh.. not to go OT here, but that's how i get a lot of PC's. People get a virus, or some errant app hoses the system, or a fan goes bad or some other minor issue that causes the PC to not work right.

Most people have no clue what could be wrong, so the PC sits in a corner gathering dust for a couple years.. by which time all they remember is that "it doesn't work anymore"..so they pass the "piece of junk" off to me. My servers are all former pieces of junk :)

is it a socket, or a slot 1? I was under the impression that they were all slot 1 until ~ 700Mhz. (My Celeron 300A (o/c'd to 450 :D) is slot 1, and so is my PIII 450)

No defcom they were not all slot1. I have a celery 366, 433, and 466 that are all socket 370.

you want a cheap processor that creates lots of heat get a palimino 1900+ or something... that'd smoke anything

or hell I'll sell you my 2600+ t-bred... this thing runs HOTT

My dual P2 450 just has heatsinks on it and they do get pretty warm to the touch. I think it was meant to have some air flowing over it.
The guy I bought the machine from cut a hole in the case and mounted a fan to blow across them,
dual_procs.jpg

My retail Celeron 266 (the one that had 0 cache and ran at 400mhz since it was a 400mhz P2 with no cache on it and sold as a Celeron) came with a fan on it.

My 433 celly is a 370 and I got a slot 1 P2 450 with no fan but a massive heatsink =Dell oem. It actually ran pretty cool though.

You could get a celeron in s370 form as low as 300a.

I think thats the slowest s370 made.

I loved my old caleron 366, and p2 266. If I could get a 2 ghz with the same type of performance as that 266 I would :D.

Isnt it weird how you could come across an old system that just seems to run faster than it should - stock? My kids grandmother has a P2(think 266) that acts like its a 400......oh well, I digress.....what exactly were u going to get that would "heat it up"?

i had a celeron 433@590 with only this piece of shit 10$ heatsink and a fan from an old 100mbit hub

oh, well, im going to build a bong cooler for a sience fair, and i wanted the thermal outpoot to be grate anoff that it would show a desent difference between stock and bong cooling

The 266 is probably running on a 100mhz FSB, that'd do it ;).

Treky, a celeron will provide enough heat output that it will work fine for what you intend to do.
