Hi folks – Could do with some advice… Building a new machine with Intel i7 940, Asus P6T MB, and I want to run three Gateway 30” XHD3000. I’d like all 3 monitors to be able to run at their maximum 2560 x 1600 resolution. I’m looking for video card(s) that can achieve this. The ATI 4870 seems to be able to run dual-link DVI, but it seems to only reach this resolution on the primary head, not the secondary. Can anyone clarify this, or recommend another Video Card scenario which can meet the objective? Also, the ATI may have unusual 8-pin power connectors and I’m seeking a power supply recommendation for the whole system that has the right capacity and connectors. Thanks!
 
ati did make some single card, 4 head models a while back, not sure if they were dual link or if someone has a new version of them, but something to look for

cross fire will only work with 2 monitors, other option is a tri pcie board and run 3 cards standalone i would think
 
Hi there - Thanks for your reply...yes I just noticed the 4850 x2 has 4xdual-link DVI's. It seems to operatre in crossfire mode to provide max res when required, but only on the primary output. I can't tell from the literature whether or not it'll run 3 monitors at 2650x1600 simultaneously. Has anyone tried this?
 
Listen it looks like you really want to run those three 30's at max resolution, so you most likely will need a vid card each. If cost is an issue, (Which since you are buying 3 30's it should not) Pick the highest card for your primary when you game and a lower card for the other monitors. Also maybe you can look at the professional graphic cards as well. There are not for gaming but they have the resolution. Maybe you should post this question on the ATI Forums or e-mail ATI support, you may get an answer from the horses mouth.
 
you could go 2 4870x2's with softTH... Softth doesnt restrict res like thriplehead2go units do... The main unit does all the rendering so though the x2 can render it-- at what quality is the question.... The 2nd card just pushes the pixels out to the far right and left monitor.. So actually a 4870 could do that work.. That card is doing zero rendering..
 
thanks for the advice folks. I'm going to test the 4850x2 to see if it does the job. it's the least expensive route for now and full-on gaming probably won't be required. I'll post the results.
