My file server took a dive tonight... My Mac said "server connection interrupted" and it would not restore. Then I could not connect by Remote Desktop. Pinging the system yielded periods where there were reasonable pings (<1 ms inside local network) alternating with periods there were ridiculous pings (3000 ms).

I went down in the basement to look at it. First thing I noticed was that when it was hard-rebooted it paused at a gray screen where normally the login prompt for Windows Server 2003 would be and did nothing. Upon rebooting it a second time I noticed the RAID info iin the BIOS was strange. This is a 7500-8 3ware card with 8 250gb drives attached, one of which was a hot spare (port 7 was the hotspare).

This is the info it gives:

The machine's off right now because I don't want to do anything until I actually know what's going on.

Did the drive hooked up to port 3 just fail and it's rebuilding the array now? What does "incomplete drives" mean? Is the machine just sitting there and not booting because the 3ware service that's installed is waiting for it to rebuild? Or is something else entirely different going on?
 
I've got some ugly trouble with my 7506-8 setup myself :mad: (WinXP). 7 disks of 300Gb for a raid 5 array of 1.8T. I tried 2T with 8 drives but it kept kicking out one disk. Later it too regularly removes one drive from the raid, does not list the drive as faulty, just removes it from the raid. I have tried to do the rebuild from the bios (ALT 3 at boot) but it never did the rebuild. Used the 9.x.x.x 3dm to do the rebuild, proceeded ok but it ended with a rebuild failure message. A verify after that however said everything is ok :confused:

I've installed new drivers and the previous version of the 3dm 7.x.x. Everything seems to work but I don't know for how long. :rolleyes:

In your case I would boot and see what the 3ware bios has to say about the raid. See if you can rebuild with the spare. It seems it was not finished yet. It might not boot if the boot disk is the raid set. I boot from a seperate disk so I can always access the raid monitor software even when the raid array is kaput.
