I know when people bench there systems they turn down XP settings, take of icons, shut down all programs, and all that stuff, but when we play games is that how we really play?

No, so I decided to do a few tests.

I am running MBM5, Gamers.IRC, Steam, AIM and MSN + wallpaper, and default xp theme.
With all that running I get

3DMark 01- 14755 daily programs
3DMark 01- 16878 shut down and everything taken off.

3DMark 03- 5875 daily programs
3DMark 03- 6116 shut down and everything taken off.

What are some of your gains and losses when you have programs on or off.
BTW you can run programs such as ati tool or clock gen for your overclocking if you use that daily.

haha...that's pretty cool...I never shut much off since I have dual procs...I wonder how much it affects me...

I'm at work right now but I'll re-bench when I get home for shits and giggles and I'll post my results. I know I get 19,200 some and 6,500 some points with all the overhead trimmed and shut down. I'll include some #'s with AA/AF enabled and maybe 1280x1024 rez to since thats what I play my games at. :)

yeaha I thought about it, who actually plays with all that stuff turned off.

with my 9800 pro I hit 21115 in 01,, aircooled..I disable my network card and turn off antivirus thats all..

I much prefer the fast, stable, daily driver over a hyped-up stripped down bench queen that produces numbers without functionality.

I'm a system-resource nazi, I make sure nothing is running automatically that I don't need to be there - so my "daily" and "benchmark" configurations are one and the same.

You guys seriously keep AIM and whatnot up during games? Why?

Here's my results. I also keep overhead to a minimum on my machine so shutting down 3 extra services didn't do jack. In fact my scores went down a couple points. lol

Tested on: P4 3.2C, 1024 PC3200 Corsair XMS 2-3-2-5, 9800Pro 128meg @ 421.2/351, SB Aud2 Platinum.
