I am thinking of biting that deal on the alienware aw2310 but I am wondering does the 3d gaming work with ati and if so what type of 3d glasses would i need for this display?

Last I heard was: AMD's advice is definitely do NOT buy any of the nVidia 3D vision 120hz displays - as they're all proprietary to the green team.

AMD should be supporting it via 3D HDMI 1.4 displays (open standards route).. there was a nice pair of third party glasses in the pipeline at some big show at the end of last year.. can't remember the name offhand.

AMD are working with iz3d to improve their driver (which already works for stuff like anaglyph/the older zalman displays etc).. I imagine they'll have some official line on 3d later this year.

If you are commited to 3D skip ATI and go nVidia. Open source is a cheap excuse for we don´t want to spend any money on 3D drivers. IZ3D drivers has been around since the stone age.

well, i went ati when i got the 5000 series because of the price/performance.

Yeah, I'm waiting for some sort of official word from AMD about 3D support directly from them. I don't want to have to mess with IZ3D or any other third party stuff. If I didn't buy my 5870 already I would have went with Nvdia solely for the first party 3D support.

Honestly if you are really interested in 3D gaming on the PC , sell that card and get a quality Nvidia card. There 3D support is the best period , miles beyond AMDs horrible 3rd party support.

For Nvidia all you have to do is buy the Nvision kit and thats it. Install it and play .

I have a Xfire 2GB/card Eyefinity6 5870 setup. However I am thinking 3D may be more immersive than surround gaming. When the Acer 27" 3D monitor hits the stores I will decide which direction I need to go in. Crysis2 will be here in March and that will be the game to test out 3D and surround.

The problem with AMD 3D is that when you have a problem "Who you gonna call?" Drivers are now changed and updated when new games come out to optimize for them. Since AMD will not have that direct responsibility with 3D whose problem will it be the glasses/driver or the card driver? Will there are 'unresolved issues' will they point fingers at each other even though they are suppose to be 'partners'? When that occurs how long will the partnership last? I am an AMD/ATI fan but on this, right now, AMD is not a serious player when it comes to 3D. Nvidia has a one stop complete solution, be safe and go with it.

I feel for you but that was then and this is now. LOOK AT MY SIG!!! My choice is do I sell my 2 Eyefinity6 cards or just build another machine. Initially, I think I am going to see how much I like 3D after the ACER HN274H comes out. If it is as immersive as I believe on a 27" I will then decide the actual implementation. I believe that AMD is working on a unified solution but that we won't see it until Displayport is more prevalent in the video world. THEN, they will rock it. Also by that time there will be a greater universal acceptance of 3D gaming, 120 HZ monitors will be more commonplace and cheaper AND cards will be able to handle 3 monitors in 3D more easily. Therefore the profitability for that segment of the market will be higher. Who knows, maybe in 3-4 years glasses will not be required for AMD HD3D. But I am not going to wait for a solution that works out of AMD when one works now out of Nvidia.

EDIT:To be fair to the 3rd party implementation proponets, there are more games that currently work with 3D with them apparently. I loved Ground Control 2 and it is listed as working with a 3rd party solution as are other older games. I am sure Nvidia is only looking forward and not back because they can get the most PR out of the new offerings rather than spending time tweaking for older games that are not played much anymore.
