I've seen Macs run Gears of War in a virtualized environment at an acceptable level, but not much info on how Windows and its applications handle 3d games.

Has anyone had experience or knows a site that goes into detail which virtualization applications can handle what games?
 
I can tell you for sure that VMWare Workstation 6.5 now does DirectX 9.0c acceleration inside of compatible Windows OS VMs.
 
Oh that is good to hear, I think I recall VMWare being the app that was running GoW.
 
VMWare can handle DirectX9 (as sabregen said) and VirtualBox can handle OpenGL. I've tried the latter and it works. There aren't many OpenGL games though, pretty much only Quake and Quake based games.
 
now, as far as game support...it's more of a trial an error kind of game, at this point. The DirectX 9.0c inside of a VM hasn't been around all that long (6 months?). Maybe there's a matrixed list out there, but I haven't looked. I tihnk you'd probably have to have a pretty tough system to run GoW in a VM at a decent clip.
 
My true intentions for virtualizing a 3d app is to run 2 client of the same program (be it quick testing maps/scripts or just fun) to avoid having to multibox. With the good news of dx9 support I am confident I can run most any game on dummed down settings to achieve my goals.
 
Parallels Server beta has VT-d support which allows direct access to HW. Add in two video cards and give each VM access to one. Install the native video drivers.
 
there's still a translation layer that has to be present. The physical host has to interpret the VM calls to the host OS API. you'll not get true hardware access in a Type 2 hypervisor, there's always going to be a translation layer of some sort for this to work.
 
Parallels Server is a Type 1 Hypervisor so there's no translation.
 
So would this make running CUDA applications possible inside a VM?

GoW virtualized with fusion only gets 3-4 fps in many places. It's not acceptable ;)

Older stuff runs fine though.
